Support Our Troops

For any of you who wish to support the troops stationed in Iraq or Afganistan, here are two organizations that are helping coordinate soldiers with people who want to help. You can go to either of these websites and register to be a pen pal, or send them much needed items. I am helping some guys in Afganistan. They are staying in a very remote part of the country and requested things like, toothpaste, soft toilet paper (military doesn't care about how soft it is-so they buy the cheap stuff) high protein foods that are easy to travel with (I sent beef jerky), etc. It is in no way a political organization. It is just one that tries to helps these men and women out as they go through a very rough time. I hope all of you will consider doing it. It's fun, easy and as always it gratifying anytime you can help out someone in a tough position.

Thank you for the links, EEWRED. I hope everyone who reads your post will participate. I know how much the men and women of our armed forces appreciate any thing you do for them. My brother returned from Iraq about this time last year, so I heard first hand about what it's really like to be there. It makes me appreciate everything I have, especially the soft toilet paper!!! :D

Now I'm going to go sign up!!!

I just donated $65 to MercyCorps earlier this week, so I'm broke... when I get some spare money I'll try to work something up for it. :)

i would definetely sign up, but i dont have much money right now. i'll help out when my mom pays my allowance.
Do you have any stamps and envelopes? Write letters! You could make a serviceman's or servicewoman's day. It's just knowing that someone back home is thinking about them and cares about them that can really lift their spirits. :)

That's easy! Just follow the first link in EEWRED's post:
http://www.anysoldier.com/index.cfm
Click on "Where to Send" to get a list of contacts. Then click on "How to Send" to see how to address your envelope (same as a package). Scroll just a bit further down and read the short section entitled "Just Letters." Letters are the most requested thing of all!

The cake is a lie
After browsing anysoldier.com for a while and seeing all the demand for candy, I think I might run down to the dollar store sometime and buy as much as I can with $10 or so... the only hard part is going to be finding stuff that doesn't melt. :) I haven't been able to get any solid figures on how much it would cost to mail a package, though. Isn't it pretty expensive?

There should be what's called an APO address that is a ssociated with the person yopu are trying to write. This is an address that is set up by the government for soldiers oversees, but it reads much like any address we would use here and the postage is about the same.

I am truly impressed by the charity you guys display. It is awesome. I know that they would appreciate anything that you can do. Even if it is just a kind word or two. Peace.
