Swedish Archaeologists discover 1,000-year-old Norse jewelry and coins

Curious George

In a recent find from Viggbyholm, Sweden, archaeologists uncovered a stash of Norse jewelry and coins dating back to 400 CE. Not only does this push back what's known of Norse culture, but among the find were coins from around Europe as well as Arabic dirhams, giving example as to the expanse of Norse trading and exploration.
While the earliest house in the settlement dates to 400CE, it looks like one of the coins in the lot is from the tenth century CE. I think that it stands to reason that the items didn’t reach the state they were found until after that time. The Vikings were raiding the Mediterranean around 900 ad.

I am not sure what the coins add to that. It is very interesting.

Good point, that it's the settlement that's dating back to 400 CE. With the French coin, that's an interesting find in that prior to this find, we've had only drawings from the 18th Century (according to the article). With the dirhams, it does really depend on which era they're from, to indicate when they were traded.
