Swimming

Well I tried out for my local beach life-guard position today.

You have to swim 500M in under 10 minutes.

Let's just say I couldn't even finish.

I'm a decently in-shape guy and man I've never felt more out of shape than after this. Ugh.

I love swimming. It's one of the few outdoors things I can do, so long as the sun isn't out.

Swimming is insane. I haven't been able to get my 500M under 11 minutes. My fastest was 11:30 I think. And I couldn't walk afterwards :p. You need to swim 3-4 times a week to really get used to it, it strains a bunch of muscles that we don't use regularly.

What strokes were you using? What strokes are you comfortable with? Some strokes are better suited for distance, and others speed. But oddly enough, I am fastest with what is considered a "distance" stroke.

Let's just say I'm not a swimmer so I used my "regular" stroke. haha

This was just a challenge for me to see where I'm at. Sort of like a base to find.

By "regular" I will assume you mean the freestyle/American crawl stroke.

Swimming is all about glide, and using the path of least resistance, so proper stroke form is paramount.

Practice the Freestyle, breast, and sidestroke. Swim for an hour straight twice a week, and then do 15 minutes high intensity once a week, and then do Intervals (2 minute sprint, 2 minute rest [example]) once a week. This will build water confidence, strength, endurance and speed in the water.

Try to relax as well. Most people get incredibly stiff in the water for reasons I don't understand.

Swimming is about practice, & developing an efficient stroke, which doesn't come as naturally as walking or running. I'll wager you (Rexxie) are just working against yourself....all those different body parts flailing about.

My last ACL tear came from swimming. I love swimming, and it's great exercise, but it does put a huge strain on the body.
Does anyone else prefer swimming in natural bodies of water over swimming pools?

At the beach here in Florida, atleast everytime I go that is, theres always people swimming alongside the shoreline. They have the head wear, and they are always atleast 25-30 feet out. They swim far...

Part time.

I'm not worried about the money but more the experience.

That is a great approach, Rex.....I have been telling the posters that want to make a career change....that they might even have to volunteer, if needed. You are setting a great example.....as an entreprenuer....who is willing to do the work, to get the experience...!!!
