Throughout the bible as well, there is a pretty common phrase that goes 'better that x person not have been born,' or variants of that. Aside from being a rather grim and pessimistic comment concerning an individual's condition, which doesn't seem to project much of a healthy attitude on life, the phrase might implicitly be saying that a soul does not really combine with the flesh until birth. Otherwise, why are these phrases marking out birth as the gate between an individual and human experience? For example, Jesus didn't say 'better if Judas was not conceived,' but he said 'better if he not been born.'
