Tell me I’m wrong

When I was a kid in my 20’s or so I always thought the war over in Israel was over holy land. I just recently started to learn about the conflict in more detail. The thought I had as a kid never crossed my mind recently. Now I’m beginning to think that’s the reason. Please tell me that they’re really not fighting over ‘holy land’. Please tell me I wasn’t right with my 20 yr. old uninformed, uneducated assumption.

I once attended a protestant prayer meeting of a televangelist and in the lobby they had a fair with everything from Israel, for menorahs to Israeli wine. Catholics don't believe this but a good deal of Protestants seem to feel called to keep friendship with Israel as a part of their religion. As I understood it, the return of the Jews to Israel is a precondition for Christ's second coming.
