Telling Friends and Family

I've never felt more sure I wish to be a Sikh, more than any other religion I've studied or considered. Not being able to tell them is painful, but given I'm unsure as to what their reaction will be, I likely can't.

I know how you feel Elizabeth. I also find it hard not to share my faith with my family. I want them to know how important it is to me and how much it's changed me. And yet, there's that fear that still nags at me. Or maybe not fear, but a feeling that I will be very sad if they don't accept me once they know. I know it will happen sooner or later, but it will be tough for me.

Until I am financially independent from my parents I will remain "in the closet" so to speak. My parents and family still believe me to be a Christian though I dropped those beliefs last year. I must continue my farce until I leave my parents home. Earlier today I was dragged to a church service that I did not in the least care for. The moment I do become independent from my parents I intend to boldly tell them about my change in beliefs.

Namaste,

This situation makes sense. After all, you are under their house. Patience is key here. Maybe Elizabeth-ji is in the same boat as you, Philomath-ji?

Namaste,

Neither am I; I am very "in the moment" kind of person; very impulsive.

So am I...it's not one of my better qualities lol.

Namaste,

Yes, I hate my impulsivity too. It is hard for me to take five and regroup my thoughts and think. For some reason, I have this habit of thinking that today is the last day...it happens everyday...

the last day of your life?

Namaste,

I usually try to get as much done in one day as possible;

I usually try to watch as many movies in one day as possible;

I usually read as much as I can in one day as possible;

etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

....because I have a bad habit of thinking that that day will be my last....

Even if today is your last day, it's just the last day of your current life. That Ātman is eternal. :D

Namaste all,

Last night was kind of a mini-milestone in terms of finally "owning" my Hindu identity.

I attended a meetup group for women my age. Not a religious one at all, just a social one. There were many nice people there but they were all strangers, so maybe in a way it was easier. ( I would never have to see them again if i got a bad reaction)

I was wearing my Lakshmi necklace and one of the women asked about it. I explained who it was, but didn't delve into details. But she turned right around and asked in front of everyone, "Oh! So are you Hindu?"

I simply said, "Yes."

Nothing terrible happened, no one got up and left, no one tried to tell me I was going to hell etc. In fact the woman who asked me started talking animatedly about this book about world religions she'd read and it started an interesting conversation.

Another awesome result of this meeting was I met a great Muslim woman who was fascinated by the fact that I was Hindu. I in turn (Having never known a Muslim) came with my own questions about her faith. We talked all night. By the end she asked if she could come with me to Temple one day, and I asked to come with her to a Mosque, to which she happily agreed. I've always felt like I should visit one but I was always too nervous to go.

Happy Happy. :D
