Texas on fire - any forum members being affected?

Kathryn

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
Here's the scene about five miles from my house a few hours ago:

Several people have been killed in the past few days, including a 20 year old mother and her baby, whose nearby home was quickly engulfed in flames. Tonight, near the scene above, my husband and I were driving on a main road, and our line of traffic was stopped by local officials and we watched a line of vehicles loaded with personal items - families evacuating the area.

By 7 pm this evening, the skies were dark and a blurry red sun was setting behind huge billows of brown smoke. We could see the red glow of flames a few miles away. It was so eerie. We've heard sirens all evening - but so far the fires have been in outlying areas, not in town where we live.

Several of these fires have been started by transformers or by extremely dry limbs or trees falling on power lines. One large fire was caused by a home owner who dropped a coal of burning charcoal from his grill, which ignited his yard in a flash and then went on to burn down four homes. That fire is still burning and is only 50 percent contained.

The fires seem to be everywhere around us - north, south, east and west. We went out to eat and the entire restaurant was silent as everyone was glued to the news. It's pretty creepy.

About forty miles northeast of us, 1700 acres have burned in a fire that is 0 percent contained at present.

WE NEED RAIN. We're parched!

Are any other forum Texans being affected by these fires? Is everyone OK?

Evacuations ordered in several E. Texas communities - KLTV 7 News Tyler, Longview, Jacksonville |

Yikes, just got up and as soon as I woke up, I smelled the smoke - even from inside the house. I went outside and acrid, bitter smoke is just hanging in the air. More evacuations last night about five miles from my house. Sheeze! I hate this!

Prince of Dorkness!
Some smoke in our air, too. No fires directly impacting us yet.

Rev, we'll take the flooding at this point. I'd rather clean up after a flood than a fire.

Still burning around here. Now we have three school districts closed and more evacuations in about a ten mile radius around my home, and even more within thirty miles.

If anyone is familiar with Jefferson, TX - things are bad up there. I mean, really bad - 30,000 acres burned, many homes lost, people evacuating frantically.

I am sitting in my house right now and I can smell the smoke. And thank goodness we moved last year - there is a fire that is still not contained, half a mile from that house. It's been burning since Saturday.

The smoke is so bad that one of my staff had to go to the doctor yesterday because he was having trouble breathing. My throat hurts and my eyes are watering constantly.

It's pretty scary - I have many customers affected and they all have a story to tell when they come into the bank. Lots of roads closed around here as well. Between the road closures and the shifting wind, which brings billows of smoke off and on, has people on edge - everytime the wind shifts and smoke comes in, people start worrying, "Is the fire closer? Do I need to get home?"

It's really eerie.

My cousin was evacuated from his farm just outside of Austin yesterday or the day before. I know that he'll do pretty well if the farm is destroyed, but it will still be very hard on him and his family. Luckily they have a safe place to stay far from the fires.

Glad to hear that you and Kathryn are okay.

I just found out this morning that the water table in our area
hasn't been this high since 1895.

They're out trying to buy us a second pump for the basement right now.
The pump that has kept us reliably dry for years
just can't handle all this water.
Hurricane, now flash floods.
And to add insult to injury the roof is now leaking.

It is disheartening, and I don't know how I'm going to afford to fix everything,
but your fire problems are far more frightening.
We are doing all we can to avoid mold,
and the smell in the basement was HORRENDOUS before we threw everything
and especially the wall to wall carpeting
out in the dumpster.
But breathing smoke like you all are...
it hurts my lungs just thinking about it.

I wanted so badly to move to Austin last year.
But i can't seem to move anywhere.
There are no utopias on earth.
I would love the freedom to live as a modern day nomad.

Stay a while, pick right up and move, whenever I want.
No ties. Financial or otherwise.

Anyway, stay safe.
Stuff is just stuff. ya know?

This solution isn't for everyone....but I've met people who have no permanent home other than the RV they drive around to visit wherever
they wish, whenever they want, for however long they please. (A storage unit at some home base provides an address for legal purposes.
Yeah, I do that for people.) One must give up having so much "stuff", but they say that isn't too hard. At any given time, there will be
some nice places in the country where there are no floods, fires, snowstorms or infestations of Revoltistanians.

Well, I have 3 school age kids, so apartment rentals may be it for a while,
once I get out of this house.

But that's true. If I could afford a really nice RV and pay it off.
Maybe in 10 years.

On a side note,
how does one deal with infestations of Revoltistanians?! :areyoucra
