I was thinking earlier today about how or whether I would remember RF in, say, my 50s or 60s, and I believe I most likely will. I joined RF at a pivotal time in my life, and it has since significantly contributed to changes in my worldview, values, education, and interpersonal relationships:
  • I have applied some things I have learned from my interactions here to many situations in my offline life, usually to positive effect. I was very socially awkward when I first joined, mainly due to having been isolated and having had few offline interactions. Talking to people from here actually helped me develop a lot of confidence to do the same offline, and I have since formed a reasonably big circle of friends and a smaller but closer circle who mean the world to me.
  • The way I think and approach various problems has changed thanks to RF, an example of which is becoming acquainted with various logical concepts, cognitive biases, etc., that I have learned about via discussions on RF. This has influenced many decisions in my life.
  • My English has improved thanks to the nature of the two main subjects discussed here (religion and politics), the extensive vocabulary of many members whose posts I have read over the years, and the opportunity to practice the language that RF has provided me with. Given how crucial English is for having a decent career, traveling, and befriending people from other countries, among other things, this has been an immensely valuable contribution from RF to my life.
  • I have made many friends here over the years, including a few with whom I have regularly been in touch for anywhere from five years to over a decade. These are long-distance friendships that are closer, more consistent, and longer-lasting than many offline friendships. A few of them were a genuine lifeline back when I had no offline friends and was both isolated and severely distressed in 2012-2014.
I have been active here for almost the entirety of the last 13 years, which is more than the age of a typical elementary-school kid. For almost 12 of those years, I have been a staff member, and I don't regret a single moment I have spent to maintain this place and serve the community.

Even if RF were to disappear from the internet tomorrow, the mark it has left on my life would still be indelible. It is mind-boggling to think of how influential an online forum and its community can be on one's life. I never thought I would stick around for so long when I first joined, nor would I have even dreamed of benefiting so much from doing so.

Thanks, RF and community!

I still maintain English is in fact your first language and so you're a flat out liar. :grinning:

Anyway, that minor point aside, it's a lovely post and great to see how massively positive RF has been for you.

I'm in my 60s now and thankfully praise the lord I can't remember most of the nonsense I've blurted out over the years. I myself learnt something here once but as you'd expect I can't remember what it was.

Carry on dear chap.

RF wouldn't be the same without you!

And we thank you for all your hard work here!

I hope this place is still around when you're in your 50s and 60s! :D

Don't trouble yourself over it. I'm keeping track. :)

Maybe it was in a previous life?

But @JustGeorge says you remember her talking crap about you 20 years ago. Is that true?
