The Age of outrage

Humans have short memories and shorter attention spans and unfortunately, we tend to take for granted certain things we have and forget what others sacrificed so that we could have our rights.
The freedom of expression we enjoy in more developed countries wasn’t always there. Our ancestors fought tooth and nail to have to right to their freedom, sometimes at a great cost to them. Many were jailed, physically abused and even killed before society achieved the current state we should all be very grateful for.

Today, in many countries journalists are being thrown in jail for opposing government injustice. Sometimes those who dare telling the truth simply “disappear”. Being able to keep a blog where you say what you think about whatever you’re interested in is a luxury many people in this world don’t have because of censorship and persecution.
At the same time people in those lands are fighting to be given the freedom we have, what is happening to ours? We seem to be going back to censorship, but this time of a different kind. Our freedom of expression is now being attacked by people who have become so sensitive and so self centered that they find everything offensive.

Outrage is everywhere. The smallest little thing that people would simply ignore a few years ago because they had more important things to worry about, now merits a youtube video, a twitter outrage or some other form of online expression.
The result is that many people are now becoming afraid of expressing themselves. We’re walking on eggshells around others.
Political correctness or whatever people want to call it, is getting ridiculous. Here’s a few examples:

To Kill a Mocking Bird has been banned from some schools because it made students “uncomfortable.” (School district pulls 'To Kill A Mockingbird' from reading list; 'makes people uncomfortable')

British doctors have been told to call expectant mothers “pregnant people”.( Don't call pregnant women 'expectant mothers' as it might offend transgender people, BMA says )

A student reporter got booted for asserting that killing apostates and infidels is sanctioned in some Muslim countries. (Portland student reporter fired for reporting public statement about Islam’s demonization of nonbelievers)

A law student at Edinburgh University is being investigated for committing a hate crime after mocking ISIS on Facebook. (Edinburgh University Student Faces Investigation for Mocking ISIS on Facebook (Updated)+)

In California, health care workers who incorrectly addressed a senior transgender patient using the wrong pronoun can receive harsher penalties than individuals who knowingly infect their sexual partners with HIV. (California To Have Harsher Penalty For Pronoun Violations Than For Knowingly Spreading HIV)

Berkeley closed its free audio library because it was inaccessible to the hearing-disabled community. (Berkeley Removes 20,000* Free Online Videos to Comply with Insane Department of Justice Ruling)

A University of Michigan group that criticized the school for failing to promote “diversity, equity, and inclusion” called for a space that will not allow white students. (UMich Students Demand 'No-Whites-Allowed' Safe-Space To Plot "Social Justice" Activism)

Carleton University removed a weight scale from its gym to promote healthy body image. (Students weigh in after Carleton University removes 'triggering' gym scale)

A University of Georgia professor adopted a “stress reduction policy” allowing emotionally brittle students to select their own grades if they felt “unduly stressed.” For in-class presentations, he allows “only positive comments.” (Prof lets students choose own grades for 'stress reduction')

CA professors claim that farmers markets normalize white people’s racism.

While I'm in very substantial agreement with the OP, I'd like to point out that it's not just the extreme political left that is trying to stomp out free speech these days. The extreme political right is doing so too. Or have you not noticed the death threats so many people on the left have been getting these days from people on the extreme right merely for expressing their opinions?

For instance: The ‘Free Speech’ Hypocrisy of Right-Wing Media

People routinely express outrage at the suppression of speech they like, but are oblivious to the suppression of speech they don't like.

What you are seeing is the ongoing results of PC culture/Social Justice ideology. The longer it continues the worse it will get. I disagree with your statement about their passion though. They are passionate about the issues. They just forget to be compassionate to the people around the issues.

The worst part is some are actively using the concept of offence (such as assuming it on other peoples' behalf) to try and silence discussion or reasoned criticism of genuine problems.

That's a good selection of links; you've covered quite a wide range of issues there :)

Political correctness has been going on for decades, and I agree that a lot of it is ridiculous. Open debate and the free exchange of ideas are quashed because somebody's feelings might be hurt. A lot of things that could be and should be discussed are considered taboo subjects, and as a result, the societal problems that PC was originally intended to solve have ended up festering in the shadows. Sweeping everything under the rug won't cause it to go away. That's the main problem with PC, since it's based on the same idea that if something is out of sight, it's out of mind.

Some apologists for PC contend that it's simply a matter of politeness and sensitivity to other people's feelings, but where is the logic in that? Especially when politeness and civility have all but gone out the window in today's culture. If we want to enforce politeness, then we should have started by punishing people for not using "please" or "thank you" when appropriate.

"if you can't say anything nice about someone, don't say anything at all."

This should not apply to journalism or academia. If it's actual slander the offended parties are free to sue. If it's true, it probably should be aired.

My point is, do these situations justify the outrageous reactions people had?

There appears to be an entire industry which functions to manufacture offence.

From certain aspects of left wing academic fields such as cultural studies to right wing talk shows you have people whose primary role is to find things to be offended by and whip their followers up into a frenzy about. It's ironic that the most vocal critics of the other tend to engage in exactly the same behaviour that they are crying about when others do it.

Half the time people are not even remotely offended by it, they are more engaging in a form of mass political theatre.

These days far too many people interpret the words of others in bad faith, that is not trying to work out what they actually meant, but instead looking at how they could distort the meaning to their own ends.

Once the basic essence of communication breaks down, you just create a poisonous swamp of self-righteous bad intentions where different parties froth at the mouth because the other 'side' has the temerity to do exactly the same thing as they are doing.

It's why I cut down my news media consumption by about 95% a year or two ago and used the time to read something more worthwhile. I thoroughly recommend it.

RF has been over this one, and it's not as presented. To be fined, it wouldn't happen just because someone did it once or twice and was mistaken, but rather knowingly, intentionally, and repeatedly misidentifying someone. They have a similar law in Canada, and some professor prepared himself to fight the cavalry and lose his job, but neither happened.
Carleton University removed a weight scale from its gym to promote healthy body image. (Students weigh in after Carleton University removes 'triggering' gym scale)
In an email to CBC News, Bruce Marshall, manager of wellness programs at Carleton, said it was the recreation and athletics department's decision to remove the scale and that it wasn't based on complaints.

Following three days of online backlash from students, Marshall told CBC, "we will weigh the pros and cons and may reconsider our decision."

The scale was removed two weeks ago "in keeping with current fitness and social trends," Marshall explained in his email.

"Although it can be used as a tool to help measure certain aspects of fitness it does not provide a good overall indication of health and here at athletics we have chosen to move away from focusing solely on bodyweight," he said.

"If you need a number to focus on in regard to reaching certain fitness goals we suggest using girth measurements. You can start by recording measurements in multiple areas, for example your torso, hips, chest, legs and arms. You would then revisit these measurements after a few weeks to keep tabs on your progress."

U of California, Berkeley, to delete publicly available educational content
The university will continue to offer massive open online courses on edX and said it plans to create new public content that is accessible to listeners or viewers with disabilities.

Cathy Koshland, vice chancellor for undergraduate education, made the announcement in a March 1 statement.

“This move will also partially address recent findings by the Department of Justice, which suggests that the YouTube and iTunes U content meet higher accessibility standards as a condition of remaining publicly available,” Koshland said. “Finally, moving our content behind authentication allows us to better protect instructor intellectual property from ‘pirates’ who have reused content for personal profit without consent.”
I think there may be more to most of these stories than what is present at first glance.

Yep the communist (extreme left) and nazis (extreme right) have more in common than they do differences. Both are extremely authoritarian, anti-free speech, and violent. Which is why Trump condemned both sides at Charlottesville.

Karni Sena, the group orchestrating the campaign against Padmavaati, is an out and out hate group and they are doing their campaign under the tacit support of several state governments. The leaders of the group have pending cases for murder, rape, kidnapping and forced marraige as well as illegal arms possession. But the police can do nothing as the governments believe creating a fake furore about hurting community and religious sentiment will add to their votes especially since they are failing to perform economically. Its an old trick, create phobia and then get votes by claiming to be the sole savior.
