If Trump doesn't get the nod, and Bernie is snubbed, it will only mean more support for these kinds of fringe candidates next time, making the parties even less relevant.
On the other hand, Republicans spend a lot of time talking about how they need their guns to protect themselves from government. At what point do the parties become the symbol, the epitome of that ineffectual government?

If Trump is a republican, Bernie is a democrat. They are both extreme examples of the party they represent.

This was going to happen sometime during the 2016 Republican primary, especially since they put 16 candidates to compete. (In reality it was a 15-man Royal Rumble with the winner facing Donald John Trump). This was destined to happen, Rubio and Kasich have enough delegates to make a Brokered Convention reality.

If Rubio and Kasich didn't spoil the election for Ted Cruz, he would have had a better chance of being the clear nominee. (60% of Republicans don't like Donald Trump).
And yet recent polling in New York has Trump at 52%.

New York doesn't even have that many Republicans.
But Donald is extreme in style more than politics,
while Bernie is the reverse.

The upstaters I know see NYC & environs as another world, one at war with them.

Where I live the numbers are around 80% Republican. Of course our county is 20,000 people. If you add it up, the state is split about 55/35 democrat to republican.

The consensus in my area is that they think NYC should have it's own state as it shares nothing in common with the rest of the state. They tend to ignore the fact that NYC pays way more than its share of taxes and that without them, we would be seriously hurting... I suspect our rankings on just about every stat would be somewhere close to Arkansas after 10 years of 'freedom'.
