The Biggest Distraction of 2008?

In your opinion, what was the most unimportant event of 2008 that received wide media attention?

Smoke

Done here.
I was going to say anything to do with Brittiney Spears.
Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan, Amy Winehouse, Brad and Angelina ... It's hard to choose. I don't object to the never-ending coverage of the minutiae of celebrity lives, provided it's in People magazine or some other venue you can easily avoid; it's when "news" programs cover this crap that I lose all respect for the "journalists" involved.

The majority of the 2008 United States Presidential campaign.

Why? Because too much of the coverage was over the inane and inconsequential. Substance was lacking everywhere.

Good point, gnomon. The hyperfocus on the Presidential election reflects completely unrealistic expectations that the President will be able to 'fix' whatever ails us.

I'm much better now (out of sight, out of mind) but when she exploded onto the scene, she completely blind-sided me.

Well like the others its really hard to choose..But I was sort of frustrated when they put out the "news" of updated research on foods we can eat to help prevent disease and stay healthy..and it reveals that we should eat an apple every day.

Oh I will say that wasnt so much of a "distraction"..But they say "coming up! " starting from the top of the news..You wait and at the very last 30 seconds what you were waiting to hear is what your grandmother told you 40 years ago. They trick you to make you "stay tuned"

Joe the Plumber's entrepreneurial ambitions?
Sarah Palin's recreational activities?

Yeah..I really loved the one about her shopping at Wal-Mart to buy diapers for the baby. That was very "interesting".I really needed to know that.Including what brand she purchased.

I personally though would rather hear about Sarah Palin shooting Carabu or how much some plumber owes in back taxes...than another daily round of "the 10 secrets to making him happy" ..or "what a woman REALLY wants in bed".
