The Christians in Burma

We've heard alot about the events between the Buddhists and Muslims in Burma, but here's something that I've recently come across, and wanted to make known.

Apparently, back in '98, a Buddhist monk named Athet Pyan Shinthaw Paulu, died. For three days, he was in the Christian hell, where he met Yama, and seen Buddhist monks, and even the Buddha himself. This event, according to Christian sources, caused around 300 Buddhist monks to convert to Christianity.

Many have doubted not only this story, but the very existence of this monk. Here's a few things to get started looking into it.

You can Google "buddhist monk raised from the dead", or the man's name, and come up with thousands of hits.

So, does this story seem to have a hint of truth to it (besides the supernatural elements), or does this seem like a Christian tactic to gain converts?

My understanding is that Christinaity has grown in the north among the tribes and there have been reports of Buddhist monks converting before. It is difficult to ascertain stories coming from such a remote area but it would not surprise me because often Christianity meets a spiritually oriented people and amazing things can happen.

It would have been unbelievaable if it were reported as coming from California.

I dunno, Must be those sneaky Christians up to their naughty tricks again.

To be honest, I don't know.
If God took on a wager from the devil to allow him to test Job for the betterment of His people and Job himself, Then I suppose it's not too far fetched to think he may also reveal hell to someone to help him and others find God.

I tend to take Near Death Experiences (NDEs) and Out of Body Experiences (OBEs) with a grain of salt as sources of evidence for the afterlife. This is mostly because of their inconsistent nature. The most popularized ones usually involve people saying they went to the Christian Hell (Bill Wiese, for example), but I've read accounts mentioning people meeting Hindu gods during NDEs as well. I've also heard of one (maybe more, can't recall specifically) account of an atheist who said he saw God when he died but not Hell. I've also read of a Jew who saw and spoke with God but nothing was mentioned about Jesus.

Even reports of the Christian Hell tend to be inconsistent. Bill Wiese's account reported the popular image of a literal, fiery Hell where everyone was burned to a charred skeletal figure yet were still alive and able to scream. Another account had a similar portrayal of Hell but I recall that there was a 10-11 year old girl there who still had remnants of clothes on. Wiese, on the other hand, reported one of the punishments in Hell was nakedness. I read another account where Hell was not fiery but was instead filled with cubes within which sinners were being tortured by demons. Another non-fiery account speaks of sinners basically running around acting like wild animals and committing all manner of evil acts like violence and rape against each other.

One of my biggest problems with many Hell accounts is the mention of demons torturing people. That sounds like it is an idea lifted from popular culture because there is no mention of such in the Bible. It goes completely against the original purpose of Hell. Satan and the demons are to become Hell's own prisoners some day. What sense would it make to put the worst offenders (demons) in charge of torturing the least offenders (human sinners)? Hell is supposed to be punishment for the demons as well. Satan does not "rule" Hell.

All of these things taken together sound to me like people see what they want to (or rather, expect to) see in NDEs and OBEs. If it was some real, objective reality, you'd expect it to be a lot more consistent.

It's on the internet so it must be true.

It sounds like a Christian tactic to gain converts. If the Buddha can't even get into heaven who can? :p

Yeah, I don't think the Buddha is in hell. I mean, the guy tried to come up with a compassionate way to stop suffering. If that's not righteous, I don't know what is.

Seems to me to be a choir story.

I believe it is the Christian tactic is to report success stories. If they are reporting the vision as true I believe they either must be deluded or finding it convenient while keeping their tongue in cheek.

I believe anyone can get into Heaven if God allows it and they know how. In the Buddha's case I don't see why either would be likely. I beleive many Christians and perhaps others think that Heaven is achieved by righteousness but I believe it comes by grace.

Buddha isn't in hell! Him and Jesus are currently on vacation in Japan.

I believe Jesus is not on earth and won't be for some time yet. As for Buddha my guess is that he has been re-incarnated many times. Isn't that the concept of finding a new Dalai Lama?
