Un-named snooty sophisticates across the pond
(eg, @ChristineM) give us Yanks grief for corrupting
their language. Yet no one butchered it more than
Limeys.
They started with a nice Germanic Sprache, but then
& swooned under the spell of quasi-Frenchies, whose
French was corrupted by other sources, eg, Vikings
(Normans).
Yankee Doodles actually changed English less than did
the Brits. And now we're even corrupting Limeys with
domestic creations or added definitions, eg, "battery",
"positive", "negative", "charge".

Interesting video....

Because I'd prefer to discuss interesting
intricacies of language. If you watched
the video, you too would be fascinated.
(This won't stop me from mirth making.)

I have a regular argument with a fundie friend
who believes that language should not evolve.
(He says that liberals are changing the language
with nefarious intent.) So he uses a dictionary
from about 1900, which he says is the inerrant
standard. On top of that problem, he often uses
words to mean what they sound like they should
mean.
I have difficulty understanding him at times, &
often ask what a particular word means to him.
He uses "feminism" to mean making men more
feminine. And "gainsaying" to mean self
aggrandizement.

Eeesh. He's an idiot who seems to have no understanding of language.

(He says that liberals are changing the language

That could be true on occassion. 'Liberals' could in itself be an example. But he remains an idiot.

standard.

Inerrant? Phht. He's an idiot.
Language changed plenty before 1900, as well as after. The word 'idiot' is actually a good example of that.

On top of that problem, he often uses
words to mean what they sound like they should
mean.

Makes sense, if you don't understand the purpose of language is to communicate.

Fake words are sometimes accidentally created.
This is useful to see if anyone is copying a
lexicographer's work. Sometimes they're created
by error.
The word "Dord" came about by mistaking the
letters representing density "D or d" as "Dord".

You sepos do have a penchant for illogical phrasings tho-

I couldn’t care less -> I could care less… (what?)

‘I’m too tired to can’ (wt bejeezus?)

I could maybe go on a bit longer.
