The cycle of life

Rex

The sun goes "up" and "down"

We have summer and winter

We are born and die

Do you think specific religions will fade away and new ones will be brought to light in the upcoming years?

To a degree. I don't think many religions fade away entirely... there's almost always someone who will follow it unless records of its existence have been erased.

Well, Rex, some anthropologists say that up to 100,000 religions have come and gone since the caves in France were painted thirty thousand years ago. It may be difficult to believe that today's religions will fade away, but I have to agree with you that "the sun rises and sets" and "life is followed by death": It's only a matter of time (albeit maybe a very long time) before today's religions have either perished or have changed so much from what we have today that we would hardly recognize them.

Some of the older traditions are fading, however, new age religions (such as Wicca) also draw on ancient principles, so who knows.

Personally, I foresee a large increase in athiesm and UU, whilst a decrease in Christianity/Islam/Judaism.

In 10,000 years, I would be surprised if just one of our religions today remained.

Some do indeed die out. But as Jensa pointed out that others will pick it up and continue it. Another interesiting question is why do some last longer then others?

Change is inevitable.
But for all to die out is not.
If we were to return in 10,000 years we may be hard put to recognise any religions, but the vestiges may well be there.
Bits of the anchient religions keep being noticed in modern day religions.

I think it's pretty likely that religions will fade as new ones or modernized versions come about, but considering the way some christians have been reacting to pressure to seperate their religion from goverment and public institutions, I'm willing to bet christianity won't fade into the background without some sort of struggle.

At a guess, because they have an element of discipline ?; I think that the majority of people feel comfortable at the thought of Tradition, and well laid down markers, and boundaries............:)

Religions survive and grow based on a few different things:
(in order of most importance)

1. It's ability to work with and gain the support of government.
2. It's ability to serve the psychological needs of the people.
3. It's ability to create a working worldview.
4. It's ability to appeal to the masses (to common folk).
5. It's ability to strengthen and support a culture or civilization.
6. It's ability to explain what common knowledge/science has not/cannot explain.
7. It's ability to become and sustain organization and power within a centralized institution.
8. It's ability to clearly define good and evil.

Religions, excpet for a few are in a slow but constant state of change. Chrisitanty has had 100 of sub-versions since the inception of the catholic church, Judiasm has had a few, hinduism has made a gradual move from polytheism to more of a mono-theistic stance. A lot of the pagan traditions worship nature or God as all-around instead of sun moon and water gods of old.

Some of the religions that don't gain enough momentum early on may die out in a very competitive enviroment but of the ones that have made it centuries aspects of many (not all) have changed in some ways over time.

Kirby could you please elaborate on why are predicting the two above statements? Just curious as to where you are coming from?

Religions will never fade away because the world will always need something telling them what they should do and what right from wrong is. Because no one wants to take blame for their own misstakes they all need something to fall on.

Not in our lifetime, but eventually, yes. History shows us this to be true.

As Sunstone pointed out "some anthropologists say that up to 100,000 religions have come and gone since the caves in France were painted thirty thousand years ago" are you saying this to be false? Are all those religions still in practice today?

i can't speak for christianity or islam but judaism has one more knotch in it's belt:D and a loss for the agnostics

There really is no telling what faiths will continue to florish and which will fall to the wayside...it's just a matter of waiting and watching.
