Actually, the left *did* condemn the looting and violence over the summer, but the right wasn't listening.

But, even there, a HUGE difference is that the events last week were in the Capitol building (federal property) and the goal was to disrupt the certification of the latest election (sedition).

The goal of the protests last summer was to get attention on the asymmetries in law enforcement towards blacks.

Don't forget to include the center too. There is rarely something more hypocritical than the political center. The nature of compromise for power and popularity leads to hypocrisy.

As mentionned by Polymath257, the Democratic establishment strongly condamned the riots and the riots themselves were in opposition to a form of oppression not in defense of one. Violence against oppression and violence against democracy aren't exactly equal in my book. Intent does matter.

You might ask yourself, while you're at it, whether anyone -- either "side" -- has a legitimate grievance? How many blacks, versus how many white republicans, get shot for walking outside? How many BLM and Antifa overran the Capitol with the intention of murdering the Speaker of the House and Vice President?
