I'm fascinated by the things people got the killer whale to do in "Free Willy"!

Does anyone know if they actually got the whale to jump over that wall of rock , to make the video?

I'm impressed!

If so, how does a submerged whale even know that there is water on the other side of the wall to land in, as opposed to grass, rock, or some terrain it cannot swim in.??

And this was mentioned in my Michael Jackson thread, but I believe Michael Jackson has been anointed to be a new "Saint Michael the Archangel"! Both are rather effeminate looking Caucasian (as in white) males

As well as Heavenly supernatural beings (entities).

By effeminate, I didn't mean something insulting. My favorite Kami who revolutionized my life and contribute to my virtues, purity, charity, and moral standards, more than Jesus Christ superstar, were female. There are many feminine qualities that are strengths.

But this thread is primarily about free Willy.

I think they faked it as with almost all movies.

The quality of the video makes it a bit difficult to really see, but the water splash as it jumps could look like CGI, but might be due to the video quality. Obviously the shot with the boy standing and it jumping over him is faked and is either CGI or a model on a crane.

Alternatively, they could simply have filmed it at different distances using two cameras as in Lord of the rings:

If you scroll 40 seconds in and Gandalf arrive at the Hobbit village.

I doubt, neither the whale would make or be able to make that jump or that its trainers or caretakers would allow it.

I see, but still its a good question, because they go far to fake these things and its interesting to see how they do it. This is how they did some of it in Lord of the rings, which you don't really think about when you see it.

I do actually wonder if whales ever do ever jump over a wall or land to enter another body of water though?

I think it is clear that some are capable, but how on earth could the submerged animal know there is water on the other side of something like that?

I don't think they do. They do "go" on land to catch seals etc. but I think that is as far as they go.

Though they can be trained to do certain “tricks” of course. It used to be for amusement but has since shifted towards showing off “natural feats” for more educational purposes

Unfortunately it’s since been found out that whales and dolphins are inherently harmed in captivity, even if it’s by well meaning conservationists. Their sonar can confuse them (surrounded by walls.)

So we should ahem free Willy, as it were

What does harmed sonar feel like in a whale?

My hypothesis is, I can't go south to free my pet spiders (when I have them), they cannot survive here, I give them a better life than they had at the pet shop (with more roaches from my apartment).

But it harms their sonar too, and my spiders have made it clear they don't like me, don't trust me, and think I'm an *** hole!
