"The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence"; do you think this is a truism? - ie a thought that 'most' people have...

If you do think this, how has it affected you- have you gone over the fence and then regretted it?:)

The grass on the other side of the fence is exactly the same as the grass on this side...the sun is just shining on it at a funny angle.

Quit a job one time for one that looked better. Once I was at the new job for a few weeks, I realized what the old job's benefits where compared to where I was now and realized it was a mistake. Now when I get upset at the place I'm working, I stop and think about the good side before making a decision on whether to leave or not. :(

People certainly didn't go by that maxim in the last election. It was "better the devil you know."

Most of the people I know seem to live by "the grass is always greener." One in particular, sold their paid for home to move into a nicer home which they're now losing in a bankruptcy...deliberately because the neighborhood they moved into went to the dogs (turned from all self-owned to slum lord rentals) over the last year and a half and they don't want the house. Bye bye equity. Traded in a van they loved for one they thought they'd love more and now are constantly harping on the fact that they wish they hadn't done it. Almost all their decisions are made this way....and regretted.

When I start looking at the other side of the fence, I try to remind myself consciously of the pros and cons and usually find that the other side isn't....before I do something stupid.

I'm sorry to hear about your 'mistake' in the respect - however, the plus side is that you are now more 'aware'. IMO there is nothing that paralells making mistakes in order to learn. As I always tell my kids when they ask for advice, I usually say something like "In my experience....but you must decide for yourself; second hand experience has no value";)

It should read "The grass always LOOKS greener ........"

It very often isn't. People from mainland US always think it would be so wonderful to live in Hawaii. However, when my father-in-law was stationed there, I learned that most people who do live there want to "get off this rock!" Higher prices for almost anything, and the fact that you can drive all the way around Oahu in one afternoon, makes it get boring after a bit. I try to remember that there is good and bad everywhere; often the problems are ones we bring with us, rather than what we find when we get somewhere.

the grass is always greener on the other side...
To me, this means that no one is ever content with what they have. They always think that there is more out there.

Personally though, I'd rather just sit on top of the fence;)

I read this article that said scientist proved the grass really is greener on the other side. It said the angle you observe your neighbors lawn from covers up the bad spots, and everything blends in. I just hope my tax dollars werent wasted on that.

I thouhgt it would be great graduating mid-term. I thought the abundance of free time would be great. WRONG. All I did for what was the second semester was sleep. I was getting very few hours at work, I couldn't go visiting with friends cause they was either in school, or roads were just to bad to be driving. On average, I slept abot 18-20 hours a day.

Are you kidding? I'd kill for that!

But then, I only get, on average, 4.5-6 hours of sleep per night (insomniac).

Yes, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Yes I have gone across the fence.

As soon as you cross the fence you are not on the 'other' side, you are now on 'this' side, which is not the other side, where the grass is greener-that's where you just came from. Are you following this. It's kind of like the fact that it will never be tomorrow.

So, in conclusion, stay on your own d*** side of the fence and take care of your grass.

Unless the grass on the otherside is abhorently brown and rotting, why not take a pole vault to it? Change is usually better, because it allows us to experience more of life. If nothing else, it turns a bad memory into a pleasant one, by allowing yourself to idealize how nice it was before you hopped. Change is our greatest attribute (just ask the Noldor ^^)

I build the fence ... so you all stay over there or I will set my pack of rabid chickens on you ... :149:

Actually , I don't believe in fences . They are self made you know .

When the Grass looks greener... That is the time to ask serious questions as to why.
Every AD mans job is to make the Grass Look Greener, on the whole they do a very good job.
This should always set off your gullibility alarm. Some time it is greener over the fence, it's just up to you to stop, think. ask questions then make up your own mind.
