Matthew 28:19

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

A view

Verse Thoughts
Just before His Ascension, the Lord gave the Church their great commission to go and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. But discipleship is not synonymous with becoming a Christian. True discipleship can only happen after salvation, for a disciple is one that learns of Christ and keeps on learning of Him.

The commission Christ gave was to make disciples of all nations. A disciple of Christ is a learner of Christ, and we are all called to be disciples of Christ, to learn of Him, and to mature in our faith. The commission Christ gave His own disciples at His Ascension was not simply a call to evangelise the lost (who certainly need to learn about God's free gift of salvation through Christ so that they can trust Him as Saviour), but it is equally a call for all believers to learn of Christ and to keep on learning of Him throughout their whole life, and even to become teachers of Christ as they grow in their Christian life.

Too often, Christ's commission is only seen as an evangelistic call to lost sinners, but it has far wider implications for it is equally a call to teach those that are saved, for all believers need to learn of Christ and to be grounded in the Word of God, for God wants all people to be saved and also to come to a knowledge of the truth. It is a fact that all disciples of Christ are believers in Him, but not all believers in Christ become His disciples.

Only a believer who is learning of Christ and growing in grace can truly be called a disciple of Christ. Only a believer who is being washed in the water of the Word, pressing on for their upward call in Christ Jesus, and maturing in their faith, can truly be called a disciple of Jesus.

Let us all become true disciples of Christ as we learn more and more of Him. And as we walk in Him, may the natural overflow be a desire to tell those we meet of the wonderful love of Christ Jesus and the salvation found in believing in Him.

My Prayer
Heavenly Father, it is my desire to know You more, to learn more of You, and to become a true disciple of Jesus Christ. Give me a teachable spirit, I pray, so that I may grow in grace. And I pray that You would enable me to go and disciple others in Your strength so that together we come to a knowledge of the truth in Christ Jesus, in Whose name I pray, AMEN.

Do you have a point you want to discuss here, or are you just preaching?

One point that seems to me worthy of discussion is the questionable notion that one can know whether one is "saved", in order to be a disciple?

Earlier, in Matthew 10, Jesus sends out the 12:
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. 9 Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, 10 no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for laborers deserve their food. 11 Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave. 12 As you enter the house, greet it. 13 If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town.
Even if you drop verse 5-6 as too limiting, I think this what Jesus meant for his disciples to do, even after the Great Commission..I've only seen a handful in my life who are attempting to do as Jesus asked them in Matt 10.

Yes, at Matthew 10:8 Jesus' followers were to preach/teach for free.
Jesus too went to the Jews (Luke 4:43) because they were given the first choice.
After Pentecost (Acts chapter 2) the way was opened up to go to the Samaritans.
Then, the way was opened up to go to the people of the gentile nations (Acts chapter 10)
Besides teaching and making disciples Jesus gave the instruction at Matthew 24:14; Acts 1:8 to tell about the 'good news of God's kingdom' on a grand international scale as a witness to the nations.
So, more than just making disciples but to proclaim to everyone about the good news (gospel) everywhere.
Jesus as Prince of Peace and King of God's Kingdom (Daniel 2:44-45) is the One who will usher in global Peace on Earth among persons of goodwill. - 1 Corinthians 15:24-26

Before one can make a disciple one needs to follow Jesus instruction at Matthew 24:14; Acts of the Apostles 1:8.
Not sure what is meant by " True discipleship can only happen 'after' salvation....." (?)
In order to be saved I find one must endure to the end according to Jesus at Matthew 24:13; Mark 13:13.
So, once a person becomes a baptised follower they are in a saved state, but baptism is No guarantee of salvation because a person can fall away - 1 Corinthians 10:12; 1 Corinthians 9:27

So, a person needs to either endure faithful to death, or be found faithfully enduring at Jesus' Glory Time to take place on Earth at the coming time of separation - Matthew 25:31-34,37
