The Greatest Concept Albums

I love great concept albums. My all time favorite is probably Pink Floyd's The Wall. I love Queens Ryche's Operation Mindcrime.

One of the best concept albums I've ever found though is Ayreon's Human Equation which is the brain child of Arjen Lucassen. It is simply massive in scope and sound. It's a double album which covers a 21 day time period in the life of a businessman who is in a coma due to a car accident. Twenty-one days, twenty-one songs. While in the coma he reviews his life, actions and deals with his emotions. Each emotion is represented by a different singer as well as the three main characters of "ME", "The Wife", and "Best Friend".

Here's a couple tastes:

Day 11: Love

Day 14: Pride

I always liked Queen II. Its a bit dated now, but it still has some great songs and gotta love the harpsichord! LOL.

I love concept albums. Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and "Dark Side of the Moon," My Chemical Romance's "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" and "Welcome to the Black Parade," David Bowie's "The Rise and Fall of ZIggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars," even the Dark Carnival CD's by ICP.

Hedwig And The Angry Inch Is one my recent favorites, Frank Zappa's Joe Garage Acts 1,2 & 3 is quite an extraordinary feat but I did not care for his Thing Fish.
Even though it was done by various artists, I have also enjoyed the soundtrack to TIME and the Butterfly Ball.

Billy Corgan is concept-album king: check out Smashing Pumpkins "Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness", or more particularly "MACHINA: The Machines of God" for pure art.

I thin The Wall is one of the greatest concept albums of all time and right behind that is Rush 2112 in my opinion.

I was going to say Sgt. Pepper, but then I remembered that The Beatles said Sgt. Pepper was influenced by Pet Sounds (The Beach Boys). So that is my answer. ;)

Here's a great concept album that you all might not have heard of. It's an album called "Chavez Ravine" by Ry Cooder. Chaves Ravine was an hispanic neighborhood in L.A. where Dodger Stadium is located today. I have never lived in L.A., I'm not hispanic, and I wasn't even born yet when this place was torn down to build the stadium, yet when I listen to the album, I feel as though I've been transported back to that time and place. It's really great music and Ry Cooder got a Grammy for the album.

You can hear the first four songs if you follow the above link. There is also a good documentary film out about Chavez Ravine and it's history. It was apparently a very special place.

I guess I also have to mention my all time favorite 'theme album' (and DVD) called "1 Giant Leap". One Giant Leap is a toure de force in both sound and imagery, and is the first truly global exploration of spirit and art through music. It's breathtaking. It's astonishing. And it opened my eyes and ears and mind in ways that no other music project has ever come close to doing. I can't even really explain it for those of you who are unfamiliar. It has to be experienced to be fully appreciated, or even comprehended.

The music is fantastic, but to just listen to the album misses out on a much greater experience. The DVD is the only way to go with a project like this. The video is as important as the music. And the way the theme is laid out so that the viewer can explore it in parts, in any order and at will, is important to the whole as well. I can't recommend this DVD strongly enough for those of you who have not experienced it.

It's life-changing. Here's a trailer.

Here's some samples:

"One Day"

"Faith" pt.1
"Faith" pt.2
