Outfreakinstanding! The special effects were at least as good as, if not even better than the LotR. Lots of backstory not in the book that is going to tie this series to the LotR series.

And most importantly, the actor who plays Thorin Oakenshield, Richard Armitage is smokin' hot! He could wield his axe at me any day! :biglaugh:

I like the backstory that was involved. The friend I went with is a LotR geek, and she was rather overwhelmed at the depth that was given to a book that was originally intended to be a bedtime story for Mr. Tolkien's young children.

The fact that the world of Middle-earth supports all the backstory and more because of the history of Middle-earth in LotR and the Silmarillion, and the books of "the histories" only makes sense that the depth of this book is brought out when the story is presented - not simply to children, but - to an adult audience.

I was just talking to a co-worker about it. He's going to see it on Saturday. I said now I can see why there will be three movies. Moreover, most scenes were not simply glossed over, they were actually pretty detailed. Yes, there was a lot of depth.

Not bad :0 I never quite looked at the mens in the movie...I was quite disappointed with the womens, in every LOTR movie...And the Hobbit too...
...
...So...I guess we'll have to fight for the virile mens, or can we share ? :D

Well, I was very impressed by the movie too ! But very disappointed with the quality. I came to see it in 2D, and it was very, very very blurry ! I almost had a headache each time the camera was moving =/

I guess the film is made to be watched in 3D for optimal quality ! Finally, some movie that use the 3D technology for something ?

Did you see it in 3D ? How was the quality ?

I was very impressed by the creatures. From a pure technical point of view of course...When you are a 3D artist it kinda ruin the magic when you know how those creatures and stuff are done  But...Just waow. I loved especially the white orc, I don't remember his name...The rigging, the animation...The sculpting was perfect, Now I just want to open ZBrush and make an orc. Damn it. I wanted to be lazy tonight. It's your fault JaiNarayanJi, you reminded me how awesome this movie was !

AND THE RABBIT SLEIGH. THAT. WAS. AWESOME.

....So...Sorry D:

I think Cate Blanchett (Galadriel) is absolutely stunning.

In The Return of the King, I was quite taken with how kingly Aragon looked when he rallied the troops at the Black Gate: "I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me! A day may come when shield are shattered... and we break all bonds of fellowship... but it is not this day... this day we fight!" (I need to get out more).

Yes, we saw it in 3D. It wasn't overdone. Just enough to catch your attention when something came at you or was in the corner of your eye.

I loved especially the white orc, I don't remember his name...

Azog. This is the actor, Manu Bennett. He was Crixus the Gaul in Spartacus Blood & Sand.

Rhosgobel Rabbits (Rhosgobel was the area of the woods where Radagast lived).

I'm so annoyed that the Hobbit doesn't come out in cinemas here until Boxing Day.
But I'm looking forward to it, after all this long time waiting, and especially after seeing such good reviews. Yay!

I've always found her...cliché :° Beautiful yes, but the poses and the way she moves...Didn't really catch my attention x')

Agree here :D They are showing on tv the LOTR trilogy, good thing to see the films again ! I was little the last time I saw them, didn't noticed time flew so fast

Motion capture ? D: Ah I should have considered that ! It was so perfect !
Still a big big work to clean the movement for putting the character :0 It's my dream to work as a 3D artist for motion capture/performance capture. This process is just the future of videogames and cinema ! :D The creatures in the Hobbit were so perfect ! Simple, classics, still perfect

I didn't watched Spartacus blood and sand :0 I remember seeing some episodes of a serie named the same, so I guess it's the one you're talking about...I wasn't comfortable with the sex scenes, too much, and not really justified...
I'm not prude or anything about sex, I'm just not comfortable watching a movie or a serie that insist on not justified sex scenes much xD

Ah but there's a reason... If you remember in the Fellowship of the Ring, how slowly Galadriel and Celeborn spoke: "Tell me, where is Gandalf for I much desire to speak with him" and moved? (remember that line?) and how slowly they descended the steps? It's because time moved so slowly in Lothlorien and under the influence of Nenya, Galadriel's ring.

Yeah, that's the one, then there was Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. I didn't like the sex, blood and violence either. I thought it was all gratuitous. Btw, the smarmy Roman named Glabus or Glaberus or something like that was played by Craig Parker... Haldir in FotR and TT.

Finally saw it myself and absolutely loved it. Excellent interpretation of the story and characters.

Saw the Hobbit in 3D yesterday. The details were wonderful. They really put lots of work into the surrounding and character design. What slightly disturbed me was the story itself, since it was so clearly a children's story at times. Then again it's not their fault, but should probably be seen as a good thing.
A friend of mine summarized the plot pretty well: "The party gets in danger... and then Gandalf arrives."

Saw it a few days ago, had a great time. It's very entertaining, the villains are vivid, and the dwarves are not your usual single dimensional ideal heroes.
The scenery is amazing, and the 3D technology does bring a great cinematic experience in general.
I read the Hobbit many years ago, and I remember it as a lovely and uplifting book. The movie trilogy draws on Tolkienian literature which goes way beyond the scope of the book, so it's safe to say that... 'hmmm this is not how I remember the story'...
Jackson makes sure to bring the back story and the history of Middle Earth and its characters. And while Tolkien himself has not yet decided to write the LOTR at the time of writing the Hobbit, this movie shows how the future events told in the LOTR unfold.

It was indeed originally intended as a children's story. In the chapter Shadow of the Past in The Fellowship of the Ring, the story took a decidedly darker turn. This series is an attempt to weave the stories together and make a seamless mythology, light at times, heavy and dark at others.

I was really impressed with how good actors those ponies were, letting that troll pick them up and swing them around like that. They looked really scared.

I quite enjoyed it as well. The music was haunting at times especially the them of the Misty Mountains. I loved The Hobbit when I was younger and it carried through with this film. I am glad they gave the dwarves some various flavors and styles to show the diversity since their exodus from their homeland.

We watched it a few days ago. I thoroughly enjoyed it, as I enjoyed LoTR, although I never read the books. I loved the personality of the Dwarves and the Brown wizard Radagast (he's so loopy - loved that rabbit sled)!

I already can't wait for the next ones!

Thorin Oakenshield was indeed quite hot, strangely perhaps I much prefer him with the dwarven hair and beard.

I saw it in some luxory theater close to my house. I was thoroughly pleased with the movie and felt it was excellent, one of the best if not the best I've seen this year (maybe tied with the Avengers). My dad was a huge Tolkein fan and was like a walking Tolkein-dictionary. He would have loved this movie and received much joy out of it, which made me miss his presence even more. I would have loved for him to explain every detail in the movie that I am oblivious to.
