I noticed nobody has started the topic of the Biden Impeachment Inquiry, that was voted for by the House. I thought I would bring it up to clarify what it is and is not.
An impeachment inquiry is not an impeachment. What is does is give the House Committee the authority to overcome foot dragging and legal bottlenecks by expediting the release of requested materials and by calling witnesses for testimony under oath. If any hard evidence is found, that is at the level of an impeachable offense, then there will be a formal impeachment trial. If there is no hard evidence, it may stop where it is. If there is a smoking gun, then it goes to a Senate Impeachment trial and then is voted on. The Democrats control the Senate, so therefore, guilty or not they can vote for rule of law or politics, but with political consequences.
The way it stands now the House Republicans want the extra authority to get long requested information and witnesses who have been slow walked by the White House and DOJ. The Democrats were and are against the release of all that safe guarded information. I am curious what was being delayed and why.
An Impeachment Inquiry is often done behind closed doors, since the sensitive nature of some evidence, at the level of the President, requires security clearance, which limits want you can ask and say in an open public forum. Sensitive is often where the best evidence is hidden. This cannot be spoken of in a public forum, at risk of breaking security laws. That benefits the defense by helping to keep the evidence in the shallows to be spun as no smoke.
Donald Trump Jr was interrogated behind closed doors by the Democrats over 20 hours and he didn't get an open trial. Hunter Biden will need to play by the same rules, but may be used to special treatment. We will see what happens and if there is a dual justice system for the contempt of Congress people got, when the Democrats were in charge for the Jan 6 trials.
