Trump has been telling people that he was out to destroy the government as we know it. He said so many, many, times. So why do the people that voted for him think he won't do exactly as he said he would? Of course he's going to destroy the justice department to keep himself and his cronies out of prison. Of course he will destroy the department of education, as the more stupid the general public is, the more easily they can be deceived and exploited. Of course he will wreck our health care and social security systems, he couldn't care less about the well-being of anyone but himself. And he can steal and extort lots of money from those services in the process. And of course he will wreck and pervert the military so he can turn it into his own personal goon squad. And of course he will continue to destroy the courts because he is a criminal. The courts are his enemy unless they are corrupted.

He said he was going to do all these things all along. So why would any of his supporters be shocked, now? I think they honestly don't give a crap. I think all they care about is what's in it for them. So they won't care who or what he destroys until he actually destroys them. This is where the capitalist mantra of greed and selfishness has brought us. This is who we are, now.

Agreed.

Now, we will see just how much harm Trump can do in four years, although I think that the MAGA Republicans will assure that only they "win" future presidential elections and will fix enough state level elections to control Congress. If so, the damage will continue for much longer than four years.

Maybe that's a good thing for America politically. Maybe a horror show is necessary to startle the lotus eaters and get them to return to normalcy, but the pattern of the last several decades is that those scares are brief. The American electorate forgets why they switched from a Republican president to a Democratic one, then welcomes the enemy back to government relatively quicky as we just saw.

The ecological damage will take longer to repair if even if Americans come out of their stupor relatively quickly and more permanently, and it's a disaster for the world climatologically, so it's hard to see a silver lining to this American cultural (intellectual and moral) collapse.

Oh well. As you said, this is what America is now. Let's see what unfolds.
