In tradition, the sun is masculine and symbolized the conscious mind, while the moon is feminine and symbolizes the unconscious mind.
During the day, the sun makes the world bright, allowing us to see and interact with the world through our sensory systems. This is all very conscious. At night, the light is very dim and our imagination; unconscious mind, becomes more conscious, as a way to fill in, that which we can no longer see. The moon provides some light, so we are less in the dark, so to speak. But shadows of darkness remain. From this basic ancient observational thinking, comes the tradition.
As an experiment, a group of people go camping in the woods. During the day, when the sun is out, it is easy to find water and wood and set up camp at the best position, sheltered from rain and rain run off.
At night, all this gets much more difficult to see and navigate. The imagination starts to add things, that may not be there. The shadow near the tree may now be thought of as a bear or the rustling in the bushes is a wolf. The moon provides some light, but not as much as the sun. There is some conscience awareness, within the mystical world of the unconscious mind.
Most of the mythology was written by males. Therefore, the symbols of the sun and moon were projections of the male's conscious and unconscious minds. The conscious mind of the male is his male side, while the unconscious mind of the male, is his female side. Males have half male DNA; father, and half female DNA; mother. The female DNA of the male is not inert, but has a connection to the male unconscious mind.
This female side of the male, projects onto biological females and tries to mold her, in its own image. The male want his spouse to be what make him feel good; unconscious projection. For example, male fashion designers tell woman how to dress, via prestige and fad. This level of creative unconscious cause and affect is the light of the moon. The biological female become a manifestation of the unconscious mind; female side, of the male designer. But since woman are different from men; their DNA is reversed, there is still darkness, in terms of the female being different, from the projection of the male's female side; shadows in moonlight.
In the example of the male dress designer, the woman satisfies this projection by wearing the dress; light of the moon. She also adds her unique twists in terms of makeup and hair. She completes the package, with her own mysteriousness; shadows among the light of the moon.
The tradition of the female principle, connected to Eve, and Eve connected to Satan, is symbolic of the female element, that defines the shadows, in the moon light of the moon. Basically the ancients were mapping the human psyche. Men have written hundreds of songs about the moon and romance. Males, become enamored and compulsive, falling in love, all stemming from their female side and her unconscious projections. The beloved becomes idealized; full moon. After the honey moon, shadows can start to appear as she breaks the mold and tries to become herself. A similar projection occurs within women, and they too seek to mold the spouse in their own unconscious image.
What is really cool, is the moon of the male and dark sun of the female; respective unconscious minds, when both active, will cross program each other. Since the unconscious of the female is male and the unconscious of the male is female; husband leads the wife, at the level of the unconscious, the female's unconscious male side, is leader in the cross programing. Her spontaneity leads. The light of the moon is weaker than the sun, and the shadows dominate the night; masculine side of the female leads the night.
What gets really complex is men are not exactly men and women are not exactly women, in the natural sense. Men can become molded projections of the male side of women; mother, and female can become modeled projections of the female side of the males; moonlight. This result is common in politics, since politics is often an unconscious mind dynamics, where logic is suspended for gut feelings and opinions; occurs at night. Nevertheless, this dynamics get very high social priority, since the unconscious mind has a connection to the main frame parts of the brain.
