The movement of the earth in Qur'an

He created the heavens and the earth with Truth, and He folds up the day over the night and folds up the night over the day. He has subjected the sun and the moon (for humans).
All of them are running until an appointed time. Lo, He is the Most Mighty, the Most Forgiving.

It is clear and doesn't need any interpretation.

To me it is as clear as mud. Care to elucidate the genius behind this passage?

Lol. You are joking, right.

1. What does it mean to "fold" the night/day?
2. What does it mean to create something "with truth?"
3. Why would anyone think that the sun and the moon (only 2 of about 1 trillion examples in the universe) would be designed for our benefit, rather than the world being the only place in our cosmic neighborhood that can sustain life?

"subjected the sun and the moon".

sub·ject
verb
past tense: subjected; past participle: subjected
səbˈjekt/
  1. 1.
cause or force to undergo (a particular experience of form of treatment).
"he'd subjected her to a terrifying ordeal"
synonyms: put through, treat with, expose to
    "they were subjected to violence"
  2. 2.
bring (a person or country) under one's control or jurisdiction, typically by using force.

The Moon, certainly, is "subjected" to the Earth. We exert a superior gravitational force over it, and it follows us. But the Sun? We're "subjected" to the Sun. And the Sun is subjected to the Milky Way Galaxy as a whole.

I must say, this might be the most unclear/abstract/confusing passage of any book I have ever read. Half of the terms used don't make any sense.

That reads like word salad. Perhaps the problem is with translation.

And I thought Genesis was hard to figure out ... this is just ridiculous. I bet reading the original in it's original text would sort some of this out though. Good point.

But we know how planets are formed. They reach a mass great enough to create gravity strong enough to "ball" them into a sphere. But, I'm not sure where God would fit in, as gravity is a force independent of God, right?

سخر doesn't mean subjected but harnessing

Sahih International
He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.
Muhsin Khan
He has created the heavens and the earth with truth. He makes the night to go in the day and makes the day to go in the night. And He has subjected the sun and the moon. Each running (on a fixed course) for an appointed term. Verily, He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving.
Pickthall
He hath created the heavens and the earth with truth. He maketh night to succeed day, and He maketh day to succeed night, and He constraineth the sun and the moon to give service, each running on for an appointed term. Is not He the Mighty, the Forgiver?
Yusuf Ali
He created the heavens and the earth in true (proportions): He makes the Night overlap the Day, and the Day overlap the Night: He has subjected the sun and the moon (to His law): Each one follows a course for a time appointed. Is not He the Exalted in Power - He Who forgives again and again?
Shakir
He has created the heavens and the earth with the truth; He makes the night cover the day and makes the day overtake the night, and He has made the sun and the moon subservient; each one runs on to an assigned term; now surely He is the Mighty, the great Forgiver.
Dr. Ghali
He created the heaven and the earth with the Truth; He rolls the night over the daytime, and He rolls the daytime over the night, and He has subjected the sun and the moon, each of them running to a stated term. Verily He is The Ever-Mighty, The Superb Forgiver.

Why are Muslim experts who translate Islamic texts so bad at translating Islamic texts that random people on the internet can easily point out their elementary mistakes?

But, it would have happened on its own, if the mass of the earth was great enough. The same thing happened with every other planet/moon.

Great that you discovered how gravity was emerged, the mass of planets caused gravity and the motion of planets.

1) 7:54 " Surely your Lord is God who created the heavens and the earth in six spans of time, then assumed all power. He covers up the day with night which comes chasing it fast; and the sun and moon and the stars are subject to His command. It is His to create and enjoin. Blessed be God, the Lord of all the worlds ".

2) 38: 27 " We have not created the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, all for nothing. Only those who deny imagine so. So for the unbelievers there is woe from the fire."

3) The sun and moon are examples. 31:20 " Have you not seen that God has subjugated everything that is in the heavens and in the earth to you, and bestowed His favours, external and esoteric, in abundance on you? And yet there are men who contend about God without any knowledge or guidance or the Book enlightening ".[/QUOTE]

From #3, the way I am reading this is that the entire universe is under the subjugation of the believers. Not so much for those who disbelieve. All they get is the eternal torture of the Hellfire (see point 2).

This verse doesn't mean that the Sun or the Moon are subjected to the Earth.
But means that He (God) subjugated the sun and the moon( by putting laws in universe* ), so we can benefit from them.

*41:12 " and He assigned to each heaven its commands ".
