The Old Testament - Sell It To Me!

Old Testament is the foundation. Jesus is supported by it. And I think it is nice how God has foretold what He will do.

For example a new person like Moses and the new covenant:

Yahweh your God will raise up to you a prophet from among you, of your brothers, like me. You shall listen to him.
Deut. 18:15 (Acts 7:37)
For finding fault with them, he said, "Behold, the days come," says the Lord, "That I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah; Not according to the cov-enant that I made with their fathers, In the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; For they did-n't continue in my covenant, And I disregarded them," says the Lord. "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel. After those days," says the Lord; "I will put my laws into their mind, I will also write them on their heart. I will be to them a God, And they will be to me a people. They will not teach every man his fellow citizen,{TR reads "neighbor" instead of "fellow citizen"} Every man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' For all will know me, From the least of them to the great-est of them. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness. I will remember their sins and lawless deeds no more."
Heb. 8:8-12 (Jer. 31:31-34)
He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave to them, saying, "All of you drink it, for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the remission of sins.
Matt. 26:27-28

This shows that God is not tied to just one person at one time in history, but is continuously present. And when He tells long before what will happen, it can be then understood that it is by His influence. I think that makes Bible God special. I don't think there is any other God who is in same way in touch what will happen.

Ok. And the violence that god perpetrates... what is your take on that? Killing, destroying, etc

If I wanted to promote Christianity why would I use the Old Testament as a source? On cursory looking it seems to involve a lot of violence from various quarters. Shouldn't I try to ignore that half of the bible and hope no-one notices? Put me straight!
The problem you have is that Jesus himself quoted and referenced the OT scores of times - from memory, he stood up the synagogue and read from the scroll of Isaiah; he specifically mentions Adam, Abraham, Moses and Elijah; he quoted passages from Psalms and Daniel, referred to King Solomon in his most famous sermon...etc. etc.

The Apostle Paul also goes to great lengths to explicate OT teachings in line with his new theology

If you chuck out the OT, you'll have to delete a fair chunk of both Jesus' teachings and Paul's...Christians who call themselves "New Testament Christians", it seems to me, haven't read very much of the bit of the Bible they claim as a guide.

I'll say...many deities are violent in myths and folk don't really criticize them as much as people criticize the abrahamic God. Probably because many think all Christians take the bible literally and infallible which some don't. Plus it's a larger religion. However Kali in hinduism dances on skulls and no body bats an eye.

Edit: i think most are mostly criticizing US Evangicals and their theology rather then Christianity as a whole when they call the Christian God violent. Maybe some other christians that dont really take into account that not all the bible is literal and dont put it in proper context

I can tell you one reason that Christians refer to the Old Testament. They believe that the prophecies contained therein are referring to Jesus.
I believe that some of the prophecies in the OT are referring to Jesus but all of the prophecies in the OT are not referring to Jesus.
I believe that Jesus was a messiah, but Jesus is not and will never be the messiah of the end times/new age.

Christians will say that Jesus will fulfill the prophecies that He did not fulfill at His first coming at His second coming but that is not possible since they have already been fulfilled by someone else. Not only that, but Jesus never promised to return to earth, not even once in the entire New Testament.
Rather, Jesus said that His work was finished here and He was no more in the world. (John 14:19, John 16:10, John 17:4, John 17:11, John 19:30)
