This may sound counter-intuitive, but please, bear with me...
I think ordinary people have more freedom than power-elites and members of the establishment do and that because of this the public has more power than one might think:
Some people say the elites/establishment control things and that normal, ordinary folk lack free will and can’t influence the world as much as the elites can and that they are entirely docile and passive - and that the elites interests therefore triumph over both the general good and the sectional interests of ordinary people
I say this is somewhat mistaken and is not representative of the big picture...
Basically: I believe that elites have power but lack freedom, and that the masses have freedom but individually have much less power than any individual member of the elite/establishment:
Freedom = freedom to do things you want to do, regardless of what others want you to do
Power = freedom to make other people do what you want them to do, regardless of what they want to do
I therefore believe there is a conflict between the freedom of the public, and the power of the elites

The elites's power is their own as it comes from their socio-economic position, but as a class of people, they are controlled by the over-seers - they have personal power but their political power over public affairs and the destiny of the world is but an illusion
We are more free than we can imagine, and they are more unfree than they can imagine!
This reality is the product of a computer simulation and this simulation is supposed to be a simulation of real life: and in real life the public has free will and is capable of critical thinking, therefore the public within The Simulation does too, to make The Simulation more valid and reliable!
Our job is to be like the public in the outside world - a challenge, for elites to manage! So as to make the reality of The Simulation like the reality of the world outside in base reality
The puppet masters are puppets themselves. Although they often use their power to further their own interests (at the expense of the public) in ways that are not controlled by any over-seer
But they lack the free will to chose how they run our planet - and some of them know this
The over-seers have far more power over the elites than the elites have over ordinary folk and that the over-seers have no interest in controlling individual members of the public in the same way that they control individual members of the establishment/elites - that’s what the establishment and elites do anyway
Basically - the elites are controlled by the over-seers, and the public is not, indeed realism demands that the public is not controlled by them
The over-seers competitively orchestrate our reality (each nation/bloc is controlled by a different team) and do so by controlling people with power - they are not interested in controlling the masses - that is what the establishment gets up to (according to their own interests) and not the over-seers, so as to produce a state of social order and class dominance - which is necessary for realism and for society to function and reproduce itself daily
In conclusion: The powerful are not free (and are not even in control), and the free are not without power
