According to the definition of domestication given there, cats have never been domesticated.

I actually found that under a question on Quora about the subject: Why was Dog among the first animals that was domesticated?

It's interesting that humans can easily form such affectionate bonds with dogs and cats, considering that dogs and cats descend from among the deadliest predators in the animal kingdom (apart from humans).

To me it's a matter of predators seeing that working together ups the odds of dinner being plentiful. And humans enjoy the predatory play of cats (chasing and pouncing) and dogs (shaking toys and demolishing them).
