is subjected to temptation and human nature (that animal part of
ourselves.) God allows this by giving us free will, to the intent that
each person can decide these issues for themselves. And this is
why Satan is allowed (the same process took place in heaven too.)
Human resolve is tested, and people can learn and grow if they
allow God to do a work in them.

You didn't explain how you square those verses. Aside from that, just the idea, makes no sense, as this would mean that satan is actually 'the deity of this world', in the context of worldly , who knows, salvation through works? A satanic theistic paradigm where you do works in the new kingdom of satan? Hey, it's your religion.

Nero committed suicide (with help) in 68 AD.. and there was a school of thought that he would return from the dead to persecute Christians .. They were terrified of him. As nutty as it sounds the belief persisted up to the 5th century AD.

They believed that he would return with an army of Parthians from across the river.. The beast coming out of the abyss as it were.

I wonder it the fear was that Domitian was Nero reincarnated... and Domitian seems to have been especially cruel...

It just seems to me that the Jewish followers of Christ in the first century understood the symbolism very well even if we don't.

Yeah, guess you have lost me. I suppose that Satan IS a diety of this world, or at
least, the world treats him as one.
Salvation through works is fiercely problematic. Certain, there are things required
of people who seek salvation - let's call it "obedience" to the word of God.
About half of all sayings of Jesus involve this obedience, and half of what Paul
wrote is the same (about a thousand commandments actually.) Failure to obey
brings the rule of Satan into your life.
