I'm sure it's a triple tax if you study the matter close enough, you're not protected against that.

Can you explain how it's a double tax?

The taxes you paid the first time didn't pay for your benefits. . It's not a saving account. They paid for others.

Now you're on the receiving end. Your entire check is a tax that me and those who are currently working, pay for you. I appreciate that you give a little back in good faith for the continued running of the program. If you and your spouse have a combined income over a certain amount, then you pay taxes in a portion of that.

The social security program was created because an alarming number of elderly were living in conditions of extremely poverty. The government check is designed to keep a non-working elderly person out of the conditions of extreme poverty. That's it.

You want more money, get a job.

And, your welcome for what me and all working Americans do to provide for you. As a liberal, I am happy to do it.

Ya know... I get social security as does my wife. Unless we get some unforeseen cash during the year, we don't have to pay taxes because of our lower income. I see no problem with paying tax when you're not in need. Whether or not you're happy with our government, we do get many benefits from it and it has to operate. Also, I'm in Florida where there's no state tax. (I saw an article in the paper the other day where lawmakers were surprised so many seniors were moving to Florida... duh.)

I think the fact that the governments of every president from Reagan onward (except for Obama) has robbed the social security fund (our money, paid in by us, to come back to us when we retire) and then replaced it with insulting "I.O.U.s" that can only be paid back BY US, is far more egregious and offensive then your erroneous presumption that they are taxing us twice on the same money (which they aren't, by the way).

Can you explain how it's a double tax?.

I am taxed on my income (tax#1). Later when I turned 67 I was taxed on my SS benefits (tax#2). If you don't understand this I suggest you talk to your annual tax preparer.

The taxes you paid the first time didn't pay for your benefits. . It's not a saving account. They paid for others..

I appreciate that you give a little back in good faith for the continued running of the program..

The social security program is the most successful government program ever created. It is so successful that our government has been borrowing from the Social Security trust fund to the tune of $3,000.000,000.000,000 dollars. That's three (3) trillion dollars and still today our government continues to "borrow" from the SS trust fund.

If you and your spouse have a combined income over a certain amount, then you pay taxes in a portion of that..

I am a grandfather several time over and I do not have a wife.

The social security program was created because an alarming number of elderly were living in conditions of extremely poverty. The government check is designed to keep a non-working elderly person out of the conditions of extreme poverty. That's it..

Then why tax my SS tax benefits?

You want more money, get a job..

I already have one.
If posting on talk boards is your job I must say you are being overpaid!!

I think one is taxed on any income in addition to SS. After 67 one may continue working full time and collect SS. If there is no other source of income such as dividends etc I don't think there is any tax on just the SS.

The problem, here, is the word "tax". Social Security is not a "tax" in that it is really only a forced retirement fund, for us. The money is taken from us while we have an income, and put away so that we can get it back, later, when we retire. It was not "taxed", per say, it was taken and set aside. Later, when we get it back, it's still "income" and is therefor still taxable as income. Think of it as a sort of forced 401K. It is a tax in that the government is forcibly taking money from us, but it's not a tax in that we get the money back, later.

They are not "borrowing" the money because their "I.O.U.s" really mean "You Owe You", since the government can only pay something back with our money. So they steal our retirement money, and then if they ever do pay it back, they will do so with yet more of our money. And we elect these dirt bags! Over and over and over, again!

And if this isn't insulting enough, the republicans are now trying to use the insolvency of the fund, THAT THEY CAUSED by stealing the money, as an excuse for discontinuing the Social Security program! And if they succeed, they will steal the rest of the money in it, and then leave millions of citizens without any retirement money at all (to go along with the health insurance millions of us won't have, because the republicans have also defunded Medicaid to give big tax cuts to themselves and their wealthy sponsors).

What wonderful, thoughtful, leaders we have running our government!

Saying "wrong it is" does not clear up your misapprehension. So, when the program was created in . . . Look, read the first couple paragraphs here. You are grossly misunderstand what SS is and how it works.

History of Social Security in the United States - Wikipedia

Your income exceeded the minimum to avoid taxation. I am happy that you are still working, and I hope you enjoy what you do. But that income is the reason you are taxed.

It is for poor elderly folks. Because you are capable and willing to work to increase your income, you don't need the government handout as much as others.

Yep. Social security is a government handout for poor, needy, elderly Americans. Stop seeing it any other way, because their's no other way to see it.

Again, I am happy you have your benefits. We're this together, even if you don't see my contribution to your continued well being. At some point, you may not be able to work further, and when that happens, you won't be taxed any more. Good luck to you.

That is a nice way of saying; when I'm dead I will no longer be required to pay this tax.

No wait, there is probably a death tax as well.

I'm not really energized by this question. What energizes me is the forthcoming attempt to steal my Social Security retirement benefits to pay for tax cuts for gigantic corporations and the rich. The wealthy will on the surface not get much, presumably, but I'm 100% convinced that their tax cuts will be buried in the fine print somewhere.

Part of this will be to turn the "loan" of the trust fund into an outright theft followed by "there's no money - sorry suckers."

The escalating debt we're about to see, yet again, will make this theft even more certain and even closer at hand.

You're correct!
Government & leftish media types often refer to the "Social Security
trust fund". But it's just a tax, the USSC having even ruled so.
But it is rather grating that they take our money, & then when we
get it back, we pay income tax on having our money returned.
Of course, it's possible to receive more than we paid in, even
adjusted for inflation. How often does this happen? I don't know.

I think it would have to be calculated on a person-by-person basis, and consider 40+ years old inflation, etc Medicare has been a great way to keep SS benefits going longer and longer (however one may take that fact) . . . So may be quite common.

Some people die before they collect the money they paid in, leaving money to cover those who live longer, or were unable to pay much in. Also, there are mathematical calculations built into the system to cover changes in social norms and cost of living. It's a great system that ensures that everyone has enough money to live on when they are old and can no longer work. It keeps old people from dying of malnutrition and exposure because for any number of reasons, they were unable to pile up enough money in their lifetime to survive old age.

The only flaw in the system was that it was unable to protect itself from the thievery of Ronald Reagan, who first stole the money from it to pay for his massive tax cuts to the very wealthy, because his "trickle-down" economics was BS, and didn't work. And once Reagan got away with it, every president but Obama has robbed the fund, since, including the insult to retards that is in the White House, currently. It was one of the very first things he did. And it's become so 'routine', now, that the media barely even mentioned it.

Ronnie Rayguns was indeed a tax & spend type, but he wasn't either the
first or the last to raid the "trust fund", ie rely upon the excess of income
over disbursements to subsidize the general fund. Obama is the reigning
king of that. We'll see if Trump can topple him as the spendiest.

From......
Reaganomics - Wikipedia
We find....
Budget_Deficit_1971_to_2001.png

So under Reagan, the deficit actually fell by the end of his 2nd term.
