Iraq is poised to slash the legal age of consent from 18 to to nine, allowing men to marry young children. The proposed legal change also deprives women of rights to divorce, child custody and inheritance. Iraq’s parliament, which is dominated by a coalition of conservative Shia Muslim parties, is preparing to vote through an amendment that would overturn the country’s “personal status law”. The legislation, also known as Law 188, was heralded as one of the most progressive in the Middle East when it was introduced in 1959 and provides an overarching set of rules governing the affairs of Iraqi families, regardless of their religious sect. As well as bringing down the legal marriage age, the amendment would also remove women’s rights to divorce, child custody and inheritance. The governing coalition says the move aligns with a strict interpretation of Islamic law and is intended to protect young girls from “immoral relationships”. The second reading of the amendment to Law 188 was passed on September 16. It isn’t the first time Shia parties in Iraq have tried to amend the personal status law – attempts to change it failed in 2014 and 2017, largely due to a backlash from Iraqi women. But the coalition now has a large parliamentary majority and is on the brink of pushing the amendment over the line, said Dr Renad Mansour, a senior research fellow at Chatham House.

Didn't Iran try to do this some time back too? And presumably as per Mohammed's example with Aisha being of this age when he (might have) married her (controversial of course and disagreements as to such) - given there is no rational reason, to modern minds, to ever allow this. If one was indeed rational, held females in the same regard as males, and wanted for them the same as what we might expect and want for males. But then, those pesky religious beliefs just seem to get in the way all too often.

This proves to me that Scriptures can be very dangerous and/or toxic if there are verses that are Adharmic when taken literal, or just prone to a sick misinterpretation, or just plain evil

Of course it also proves that there are demonic and sick people nowadays, not surprisingly as this has been Kali Yuga for a reason.

Normal, and sane people would skip these verses, or at least not put them in practice

Maybe the lesson we need to learn, is to say NO to these verses, and NO to all sick behavior, but obviously too many still have sick minds that indulge in it

There is only one solution, IMHO, and that is that all people individually decide "I STOP evil now".

Purify body is easy, as compared to purify your mind, hence the first step is to purify your diet and other senses

Is America ready?
Seeing USA food addiction, 50% obese??
So, NOT ready, imo

Is the Arab world ready?
Seeing your story, with 9 year olds??
So, NOT ready, imo

Hence this violence probably will continue for many more centuries if not millennia

Good thing is, that on an individual level we can purify. Like they say "if can't change the world, but you can change yourself"

So, I work hard to purify my own mind

Not for me it isn't. More as to recognising that religious doctrines from the past often need to remain there, and not apply to the future generations that have to live with new knowledge and understanding so as not to be so deterministic over the lives of others. Patriarchy, which still seems to be a major element of Islam, should be long gone by now - and is in the more progressive countries.

I doubt this would be likely (any changes envisaged) if there was not still some debate as to the age of Aisha (being nine) - and where such was quite possible at the time - given that children were simply the property of their parents then. And many still see this as such nowadays - and hence why they pass their religious beliefs on to them.

My father, not religious, said few years ago:
"You are my son, you live thanks to me, so I have the right to hurt you, if you have a problem with that ... that's your problem, deal with it"
- and hence why they pass their religious beliefs on to them.
I stopped my father's craziness
So, I stopped this vicious cycle

I'm sorry to see any who had anything bad from a parent. I was lucky, and had nothing but kindness and love passed down to me by my mother (father mostly silent), and even if she had any particular religious beliefs, these were seemingly an option given that they were not forced upon me or my brothers.

I don't see it as bad, it was my challenge to overcome. My life lessons to learn

Trump and Musk had much "worse" parents, also some on RF, and thanks to my personal experience and therefore understanding, I feel compassion and empathy for them; no anger nor hate. Of course their behavior I do not accept

Almost all who belittle others suffer still from their unresolved childhood trauma. They must stop accepting their parents BS, and then they will stop bullying themselves automatically.

And then finally they regained Self Respect

Yes, I'm sure it can be difficult for many who did have fairly normal and happy lives to understand how and why people do tend to turn out different, and often having such from their parents or one at least. My first experience of this, apart from what I began to read as a youth, was a friend who was just so competitive - to the point of trying to affect or even upset another's performance - and I suspected he got this from his father. Being a rather fair (and not very competitive) person this did annoy me on one occasion. That I was perhaps fitter as to cycling (on hills) and probably more confident as to climbing perhaps upset him. But we still managed to do some very worthwhile and enjoyable enterprises together - with me implicitly trusting him and his abilities when climbing. As apparently he did so with me.

I suppose the first thing to do as to what we get from our parents is to recognise that such exists, which many might not do.

I admire this about you. No hate, no anger, but rather compassion for such individuals.

This made me think of a comment that I had read elsewhere about a student saying to her teacher, ‘You’re a disgrace!’ Such an insult was very likely something that her parents had hurled at her.

I must admit, with Trump and Musk I still struggle, hence I wrote it down today, and it works.

I remember from India that they advice kids to chant AUM, while simultaneously writing it down. It really worked with me here

Thank you for sharing your example. Helps me also, because I see it happen also on RF, funny thing was it happened within a short time after I wrote this ... the Universe gives me ample opportunities to practice this, how to deal with it the most appropriate way

Useful example, I used to be competitive too, just unaware I still thought back then, that I needed to prove myself to my father
- to the point of trying to affect or even upset another's performance -
I didn't go that far, probably my trauma was not that bad. Musk's father really drilled him, he was never good enough, that drilling helped in Musk becoming billionaire, which made his father angry (oh my God, parents can be so complex)
and I suspected he got this from his father.
You were wise at young age, I saw it years later

A nice, now I remember a friend who did the same to me. I was more fit, and not competitive anymore, but he made sure he was all the time 1 m ahead, and I thought what the heck why not biking next to each other. I didn't see the connection then, thanks to your example this puzzle peace fits now also
But we still managed to do some very worthwhile and enjoyable enterprises together - with me implicitly trusting him and his abilities when climbing. As apparently he did so with me.

Once I saw all these psychological tricks we all play, when unaware, life got much more fun, especially when slowly these triggers got less
