I wasn't in for 20 years, but I served in the military as a crew chief. Transgender people have always been in the military. They just haven't always been out at the time.

Wow. You don't just "decide" to be transgender one day. You either are or you are not. Some people aren't ready to come out right away, which is mostly due to society making it difficult. Just because someone hasn't come out or hasn't started medically transitioning doesn't mean they are not transgender yet. Do I have to pull out the "born this way" meme?

If I were able to come out during or before my military service, I know I would have.
