folks,
i have seen that the media and western and our own indian leaders alike have been projecting india as an erging nation and a superpower to be and what not. this couldn't be farther fro the truth though. i am trying to give an insider's view of india's "evolution" and would like opinions from all you fine people.
1) a bit about how electoral politics are in india. when the indian national congress assumed power after independence nehru pretty much ran the party on dictatorial lines and announced general electioms in 1952 barely two years after founding the republic of india in 1950.
2) the vast masses of indian people were then illiterate let alone educated or politically aware. cash and free booze for votes to the congress were a commonplace thing during election 'campaigning' and still is.
3) THE PEOPLE THROGH THESE 60 ODD YEARS AFETR INDEPENDENCE HAVE NO NOTION OF DEMOCRACY, WHY ARE ELECTIONS HELD, WHY DO THEY VOTE FOR CONGRESS OR ANY OTHER OF THE ZILLION ODD PARTIES.
4) the gandhi-nehru dynasty has iconic/legendary status in the eyes of people esp in the rural areas where the voting is really done. they are in fact deified to a sickening degree - the nehrus and gandhis can do no wrong in the eyes of the people. they are beyond reproach, and have eternal impunity.
5) the ruling families in rural and even urban areas today are feudal landowners and the like. they are rutheless money-mongers and for generations have exploited the common people to inhuman levels.yet these are elected term after term to the assembly by the same people who say it is their "duty' to vote for them!
6) the average indian in rural and semi-urban areas today earns as less as 40-100 rupees a day - that's less than 3 dollars a day. this too if you are lucky - others go half-starved not sure when and where the next meal is coming from.
7) women in rural areas wlak several miles everyday to FETCH WATER FOR DRINKING, BATHING AND WASHING PURPOSES.THERE IS VIRTUALLY NO MODERN PLUMBING IN VILLAGES.FLUSH TOILETS ARE UNHEARD OF . TAP WATER IS A LUXURY .
8) SCHOOLING IN VILLAGES AS WELL AS CITIES IS A MESS. no playgrounds attached to schools,no classrooms,rain leaking through roofs,ROOFS COLLAPSING ON AND KILLING CHILDREN.
9) hospitals are the worst instances of malfeasance and criminal neglect. women in labour pains have to be driven in rickety buses along pot-holed earth roads to the nearest hospital (which happens to be in the neighbouring distriCt if she is lucky) during these bus travels the child/foetus ACTUALLY DESCENDS FROM THE UTERUS RESULTING IN AN UNPLANNED DELIVERY IN THE BUS. IN MOST CASES MOTHER AND CHILD OR EITHER ONE DIES.
10) have you heard of hospitals in any developing country where a citizen admits himself for some reason in good faith and exits the hospital minus his FUNCTIONING KIDNEYS? these kidneys are then "auctioned" in the black market for body parts.
11) why don't the people do anything abt this state of affairs? perverted religiosity has made excellent fatalists out of indians -" THIS IS OUR FATE, OUR KARMA GOD WISHED IT TO BE SO" they keep chanting this and let the leaders get way with anything.
12) the average politician in india is callously cruel. unbeleivably so. he is in politics puerely for the money and he makes no bones abt it. FUND ALLOCATIONS ARE THE ETERNAL GREEN PASTURES FOR THESE VULTURES.aquiring land for state projects and selling it off to private developers and corporate giants at a profit is another popular manuever.whereas the living conditions of most people are appalling. in Mumbai you will see as many as 10-14 people inhabiting a space as less as 500 sp feet. millions live like this across the country. while these leaders have HELIPADS CONSTRUCTED IN THE PREMISES OF THEIR PALATIAL HOUSES SO THEY CAN FLY IN AND OUT AT A WHIM. you would be astounded at the money these ******** have siphoned off into numbered accounts in SWISS banks. the SOCIETE GENERALE DE BANKE LAUSANNE OR SOME SUCH AUTHORITY DISCLOSED THAT INDIAN POLITICIANS HAVE DEPOSITED MONEY TO THE TUNE OF 400 BILLION USD IN THEIR BANKS!!
how does this compare to the fact that SOME 20000 FARMERS COMMITED SUICIDE IN THE PAST 5 YEARS ALONE FOR DEFAULTING ON LOANS BECAUSE OF BAD CROPS?
NO ONE CARES HERE FOLKS LIFE IS PRETTY CHEAP DOWN HERE. WHAT'S A DEAD FARMER OR TWO EVEN IF HE IS HANGING BY A ROPE IN HIS OWN FARM FOR DEFAULTING ON A LOAN AS LESS AS 2500 USD?
