"The universe has always existed."

If this universe had a beginning, perhaps the energy that caused it to occur came from another universe. A growing number of physicists believe that that is a reasonable possibility, but have also said that it is not currently possible to test the theory, and might not ever be possible to test.

If the universe begin to expand about 14 billion years ago, perhaps it existed long before that in very small form, but started to expand about 14 billion years ago.

I think it was pinched off from another universe. I think our universe pinches off others. I think there was never a beginning to this process, nor will ever be an end. Just my beliefs.

The only way this becomes an interesting question is if scientists find evidence of residual radiation from a previous Big Bang. Unlikely, but not impossible.

and what would cause it to do that?

Same. I believe in an eternal and infinite multiverse. There was no real beginning and there will never be an end.

What is the universe expanding into? Perhaps we are within the event horizon of an enormous blackhole that is part of a much larger universe. We measure an apparent expansion at an ever increasing speed. Perhaps we are spinning faster and faster toward oblivion. Have a nice day.

:). Do you see a problem with the mass of the universe expanding into a vacuum ?

If time ever had a beginning, it still would've always existed. The same goes for the universe.

Ignoring for the nonce how it began, you're nevertheless going to have lots of fun trying to explain away entropy. . .

Bruce

Please explain how entropy prevents the universe from being either eternal or infinite ?

Infinite multiverse. Infinite and eternal, not necessarily static, so entropy is not inexplicable.

Even in a single universe, whether eternal or finite, entropy is the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics ! It is designed to work in our macroscopic universe.

We are but mere fallible humans, and do not know. In fact, we do not even know how to cure the common cold.

It doesn't matter if we know or not. There still would have to be something that would take that original something from a static to a dynamic state. And it couldn't be part of it either. It would have to be something outside of it acting upon it.

Brane cosmology works on this aspect. Two Branes interreacting and at the point they touch, a new universe is born.

Your Title to the OP was

"The universe has always existed."

We know it hasn't in the form it is in now. Then you explain basically the bang and yes a growing number of cosmologist are working on multiverse theories and proof say in the CMB or other lines of evidence, but it may be possible to prove with technology and a better understanding of cosmology and QM theory combined. That would be big if they are able to work that out. We have done pretty good in a short amount of time really.

But the universe isn't static, that we know for sure.

There is also an important factor called Spacetime. Space and time are interwoven. Gravity can bend and twist space. Gravity effects time
