The Universe Taught Me...

The Kilted Heathen

Crow FreyjasmaðR
I hear things like "The Universe was giving me this message/lesson/sign/whatever" quite often. Look; if there's one true "lesson that The Universe is teaching" people, it's that the broader your scope, the less things revolve around you.

We start off on Earth, and things revolve around us. The sun, moon and stars trace a path across the sky. Comets shoot by us. Lore and astrology are based on our position and how we view the universe.

But then it gets bigger. We're just one rock of many, orbiting around the sun. We're not special, or really all that important. We're just another dancer in the ballet.

However even the sun isn't all that important. It's really a small player on a galactic scale; one of countless other stars that all orbit around galactic center. And our galaxy? One of who knows how many.

I'm all for divine guidance, lessons and intercession, but sometimes we need to dial down the importance that we place on how often The Universe is showing one iota on a dust-speck in the whole universe which Yoga pants will make their behind pop the best.

I see it as a matter of perspective. If one perceives one's true nature as "one iota on a dust-speck in the whole universe," then one is limited to the (rather nihilistic) perspective presented in the OP. But there are those that realize that their true nature lies beyond what is observed in this physical Universe.

Don't think I've ever been called nihilistic before! My point wasn't so much that we're insignificant, but that the issue of "the Universe showed me this meaningless trite thing" is. Of course we retain perspective and importance, but it's also somewhat of a universal take on "the more I see, the less I know".

When I try to envision something that I could say is a meaningless trite thing, I try but I can't.

A lot of people are self-centered. Whatever the reality is, they want everything to be about them. We are important, but only on a scale that is very small. Even the richest and most powerful of humans can't do anything about the universe. We do have the option of making earth a hell if we don't shape up as a mankind.

When ever I hear people refer to how insignificant humanity is in compared with the so called universe, I wonder, do you think there is a life greater than that which we can experience, why shouldn't we think we are significant? Even if we are an "accident", we are an "accident" that has the capacity to believe in itself.

It's taken many many thousands of years of education, civilization, theories fantasies etc to render nature totally dead. Dead air, dead water, dead sky, dead sun, dead space, dead cosmos. I don't see it as a positive. I am not saying you said that, but I am adding you are correct, nature is bigger than just this planet. It's much much bigger than our cranium specifically the intellect. It's not a House it's not a math model that is profoundly unevolved and primative and not intelligent. It's our current fantasy we call cosmology. A dead, inert, random magical self organising, dead. What is dead? Science has a big dead problem and so does religion. It's the intellects blind spot. Nature alive or extinction is our reality today. No fantasy scientific work around to the enviromental mess.

I don't think anything about science has rendered nature "dead". We still very much see it as alive, even if most of the world does not see divinity in it.

That's why I said we are important. But it's mostly to our own circle. There's soon 10 billion of us using the planet. It doesn't even have much significance what happens to someone on the other side of the planet.

Even if we are an "accident", we are an "accident" that has the capacity to believe in itself.
Is it important? Personally I don't think about it except when others want to to talk about "meaning", I just live my life.

I find our world so very remarkable. We are so small and yet life on this planet is so diverse and beautiful (Except ticks) the natural biomes are so diverse and great (Except the Sahara desert) And likewise all cultures are so diverse and stunning (Except when they kill eachother). And even smaller than this earth is me! Hello! And you too! And every human also! And their annoying human behaviour, their intelligent human behaviour, their humoristic human behaviour, their lazy human behaviour, their human jokes, their human songs, their human dances, their human passions, their human annoyances, their human love or lack thereof, their human wisdom or lack thereof, their human faith or lack thereof, their human skills or lack thereof, their human politeness or lack thereof and you know what? I just love it all (Sometimes)!

But there is something even greater than all this man.... Yes tthis is something so amazing that makes this planet so super cool! It is something smaller than a basketball but bigger than all that is science. Something about the size of your two fists together that operates a vehicle way better than you will ever do! It can even operate two vehicles at the same time! That is because it is very smart. And it also named itself! It is not that big, but consumes a lot of food, really likes to get fat and greasy but critisizes you when you get fat, and that hurts you!

It's the brain! And within it is another whole universe. A personal universe. A spiritual plane, a temple, a warzone, everything can be in your brain. Meditate upon something and watch it come alive before your very eyes, have a lucid dream and create your own world out of scratch, listen to some alphawaves and just relax, learn to play a game and challenge your brain, Try philosophy and hurt your brain good, have discussions online with other brains that work! Or sometimes with brains that don't work! It dfoesn't matter! It's possible! Try to chat with a brainless artificial intelligence! WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LIFE? WHY ARE THERE STILL RERUNS OF LAW AND ORDER AFTER 28 YEARS? Perhaps i should learn a code,or write a code! Learn a song, write a song! Learn a language, write a language! The brain is so amazing if it is your friend, and it is so amazingly troublesome when it is your enemy. But it's all your own fault, its your brain!

Engage yourself in the cultivation of knowledge.
Better than knowledge, however, is meditation.
And better than meditation is the complete renunciation of the fruits of action,
for by such renunciation one can attain peace of mind out of nothing.

Yes but do you live it with meaning? Everything has meaning, just because we can't see its meaning doesn't mean it is without significance, to think such, now that is vanity.

I often look at the universe and realize how insignificant other people are.

I suppose you could think of it as having meaning, like clouds drifting in the sky have their destinations and purpose, at least in human eyes.

Everything has meaning, just because we can't see its meaning doesn't mean it is without significance, to think such, now that is vanity.
It's fine that you think so, but I fail to see how the opposite of vanity is vanity in your eyes.
