The war in Ukraine/Russia is it a form of WW3?

It is mostly fought in just one country and there are officially only two participants.
In Syria there were/are dozens of fractions/countries involved. That had much more WWIII quality.

Not sure I would characterize it that way. It may be more akin to a civil war. This is a far more personal fight between two interrelated countries with a centuries-long enmity. The World Wars were a power struggle among the major imperial powers over global hegemony, where it was strictly business not personal. This conflict seems more personal than business.

It is a world war but with the fighting only in the Ukraine. The sanctions from the West, Russia cutting off (perhaps) energy to Europe, Russia and Iran getting together to supply weapons countering the West arming Ukraine with close to the best we have.

Then we have the wild rants from Russia about taking back Alaska, nuking Western Europe, invading Poland and other nations.

We have nations in Europe joining NATO and even reports that Switzerland might start thinking seriously about it. That never happened during the Cold War and represents a new escalation albeit mostly a political one.

So the question is more precisely asked is whether or not the shooting part of the war will spill over into other nations and involve NATO directly.

People see it as a catalyst more than anything else.

A proverbial flashpoint that only time will tell if it is the case or not.

I don't think so. If China was to join Russia and they start taking other countries then yes, it could become WW3.

As long as Russia avoids any military action against a NATO country I think the conflict is contained. The real question is if Putin or the Russian military push their limits. If we see Russian aircraft and ships going into NATO space it could be a test and provocation. NATO will be very careful about response. Since Putin continues to violate international law by targeting civilians I don't think anyone can trust him. As he gets more mired down who knows what he will decide to do.
