There's Always A Choice...

... sometimes, they're all bad.

"We always have a choice. We say there is no choice only to comfort ourselves when a decision is already made." ~ J. Michael Straczynski, Babylon 5

I agree with these quotes. No matter how bad things get, no matter how extreme the situation, we still have choices.

What say you?

I agree that through choice, we all have an unalienable control over our lives. But that control is not absolute because the choices of others' can adversely effect the individual.

I mean, we don't have a choice regarding when we are born, what genes we have, the culture of the people surrounding us, what we intrinsically come to believe. Those things come down to the choices of other people, intimitely related to us, whether in the past or present.

What about tragic events? Do we choose those? A person would never choose to be killed by an axe-weilding maniac. But that's not to say that some psychopath out there would never wield an axe against someone. In a case like that, the choices of someone else are having an effect on the individual.

And the choices of certain other people can also influence our own choices to an extent. If we have a role model in life, then we will try to mirror what they do. Conversely, if there is someone we know who we don't like, then we will try to do the opposite of what they do. Again, other peoples' choices indirectly influence our lives all the time.

Do you see what I mean?

You seem to've misread me. I'm not talking about control. Only choice.

Yes, I believe you always have a choice while conscious. A number of things come to mind on this topic:

#1 - I've heard life described as a dance: the music plays, the people around you do their things, your partner does his/hers, your own skills may be limited, etc. but you make the best of it.

#2 - I think it was Ellie Wiesel who said that the last choice that can be taken from you is to have your own opinion on what is happening to you.

#3 - it has helped me to try to come up with at least three choices for any decision, to get away from the "divide a piece of paper with a vertical line and list the pros and cons" since that leads to binary thinking; often there are other choices than "do" or "don't do". Maybe now is not the right time to do something, or maybe it is "a" right time, but the future might be a better time. Maybe what you're trying to achieve by doing something can be achieved in other ways and/or you need to research more to see if that's true.

In general, you always have a choice, but in the most extreme cases, you might not.

For example, let's see, if you have been imprisoned, are tied up in some fashion or another, in a way in which you cannot escape. You've been gagged in a way in which it is impossible to speak. Really no way for you to move either. Now, what choice can you make in this scenario? You can choose to not cry, as they torture you, i suppose, though, you don't really have control over that, so let's say, you can choose your attitude for how you see the situation.

That is always true. But wait! What if you are unconscious during this whole event? What then? Where is your choice? And please assume that you did not choose to be unconscious, for the sake of argument.

Completely agree.
Trouble is sometimes it's unclear which are the good choices and which are the bad.

I would venture that even in those examples there is your own choice involved ;)

But yes, Storm, there is choice ALL WAYS. ;)

The term "lesser of two evils" comes to mind..

And I guess it could also be the "least" evil out of many choices.

We still have a choice even in the worst scenario, we can choose to give up or keep trying. There is the possibility that we might just make it through....

Your scenario was out of the context of the op....Anyone knows that if your unconscious you couldn't make a choice.....But wait!....What if you were not really unconscious but simply acted like you were, then you did have a choice. you were able to fool your abductor....:D..

I think of all the people that jumped to their deaths from the burning towers on 9-11.

If you ask me..thats a clear example of having to choose from very bad options..Those people IMHO took control back of their own destiny the only way they could.

There are those who think that life has nothing left to chance take,
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance.

A planet of playthings,
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
"The stars aren't aligned,
Or the gods are malign..."
Blame is better to give than receive.

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill.

There are those who think that they were dealt a losing hand,
The cards were stacked against them; they weren't born in Lotusland.

All preordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate.
Kicked in the face,
You can't pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate.

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill.

Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete.
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet.

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill.

I think of the men who rushed into the cockpit of the plane and changed the destination of the plane. It was sad and still had a fatal ending but they had a choice to try something or stay in their seats.....At least they went down trying.
I would hope I could do something so brave in a terrible situation.....

Faced with the odds stacked against them they still had a choice and by the actions based on that choice they probably saved thousands of lives.....
No matter how small or how large the choice we usually always have one to make.
Good "choice" for a thread Storm....

I will stick with the qoute to my grave that:
"No matter how bad anything get's always remember that you are not the guy who got his balls bit off by a chimpanzee"
