I just went to bed....

Was lying in bed, in the dark then I heard:

drip drip drip drip drip

"what's that?" I thought

I got up out of bed and there was a pool of water on the bedroom floor that I had not noticed before

I looked up and there was water dripping down from the lightbulb that lights my bedroom!

There was a bead of water forming on the lightbulb and water creeping down the wire that attaches it to the ceiling!

I'm not a very practical person but I know that water and electricity are not a safe mix

I've managed to arrange an emergency roofer and plumber and it is now gone 2:30 am

Has anyone else had any recent home emergencies? Things going wrong with your home?

What was causing that?

An aquarium had a slow leak from the filter and was leaking water under the vinyl flooring.

I had a room and my subbasement flood a couple years back.
My basement flooded last week

It was terrible, there was a flood that was around four inches deep, it was almost biblical, there was water pouring out of the wall

Luckily there is a young man who lives next door who is very practical and he managed to shut it off

Turns out it was a thing the guy who lived here before installed himself that had gone wrong, the plumber who came to sort it out said that no even semi-competent plumber would have installed the thing like how it was installed

I used to have an aquarium!

What fishes do you have?

I had sailfin mollies, danios, guppies, neon tetras, and some other type whose name I've forgotten

It was a 64 litre one so quite big, it was nice seeing the little fishes swimming about!

Never had any leaks though

I had some little snails too, they were cute in their own strange way!

The one in question is a 50 gallon(189 liters). It wasn't leaking from the tank itself, but had a slow drip out of the side of the filter. Not the first time that's happned(last time it was a different tank, though). Sometimes if the filter leans back too far and you don't catch it, that can happen...

There are three Salvin Cichlids in there! They were born in that tank. They can be kind of challenging fish due to aggressive behavior and getting stressed easily, but they're really pretty.

I've always wanted a pet axolotl

Beautiful creatures!

I'm unsure, but it seems they're mostly in water in the store. I can't recall for sure, though.
I'd be up for getting one but I'd be worried that it might escape

I'd also want to get two, so that they have each other's company - but what if they breed and I'm over-run with little baby axolotls!

I'd have to get two of the same sex, probably two females in case the males fight!

Are they social creatures?

Fish in the cichlid family are cute; they pair up and are loyal for life.

The only drawback is, if one dies, the other usually follows soon after(in my experience).

Do you know if they only live in water, or do they need a bit of dry land?
They should only live in water. A friend who keeps them as pets told me that they have lungs, and should be physiologically able to live outside of water for a short time, except for the fact they get anxious and die from low oxygen eventually.

They are also incredibly simple-minded creatures, I doubt they are too social.

I thought they may be able to live on land because they have little stubby legs!

Soon after we bought this house we had an incident worth mentioning. We still lived in England and came to France 3 or 4 times a year to work on it. The last job before returning home for the last time in a year was drain the radiators. The first job when we returned in spring was refill the heating system.

One winter the temperature dropped to -18c for a couple of weeks. We must have not completely drained the rads because frozen water blew one radiator apart.

So we arrived, turned on the water, started to refill the system. Funny the water pressure isn't rising. Then a shout from the lounge, "water is running from the light fitting. Checked upstairs and one of the bedrooms is over an inch deep in water.

While we were mopping up a neighbour called a plumber. Who was at that time playing in a rugby match. Because it was am emergency he stopped the game, came to our house, disconnected the faulty radiator and patched a copper pipe so we could still use the heating. Then he left to return to the game which started up again. Only in France could this happen.

We didn't use the light until it was checked by an electrician the next day.
