Thinking of swearing an oath

Artemis has been known to protect maidens. Taking such an oath would show commitment to her. There are a few more reasons why I would make such an oath but I'll keep them to myself.

Secondly, she was a fertility goddess/mother goddess so I'm pretty sure she was down with the shagging and having babies. One could argue that rearing children would be a devotional act in her case.

Feel free to keep your reasons to yourself, but I remain confused.

Are you talking of Artemis or Aphrodite? Cuz I'm thinking of swearing to Artemis one of the 3 virgin goddesses. The other two are Hestia and Athena

Artemis was one of the classic goddesses that was venerated particularly during childbirth. Even devotees to her considered it only important to remain a virgin until married. In daily life, it would have been hunters and expecting mothers that would have paid the most attention to her.

So i'm thinking about swearing an oath to the goddess Artemis. Swearing to remain a virgin and never marry in exchange for protection knowledge and being in her service. I'm not sure tho..."But Ray" I can hear you saying...."Why not?You're asexual right? You don't experience sexual attraction.Should be an easy oath to keep." Well I'm not aromantic. What if I fall in love and want to get marry?What are the consequences of breaking such an oath? What if Aphrodite gets ticked since according to some myths she has a rivalry with Artemis?What then? So I'm still thinking on it. But this makes me curious.Has anyone here made any religious oaths?If so how did it go?

If you really feel called to, good luck. But you should think on it for a while and not jump into it, especially if you are very young. Even the vestal virgins were not expected to be celibate for their entire lives.

As for Aphrodite, we're always in conflict with one deity or another's sphere of influence but that is the nature of a multifaceted universe. She's likely not going to go out of her way to bother you. She obviously didn't call you to her. It's like if Dionysus got mad at me for preferring Zeus, Athena and Apollo to him.

I'm not sure on all of that and there are conflicting stories and myths. But, we know for sure she was venerated by maidens, mothers with children, and hunters. So as much as that might not go together for modern minds it's simple enough to say all of those things apply.

I have been posting on this forum for about ten years, and I mean it will be interesting to hear what you decide, if you decide to tell us. Also it will interesting (over the years) to occasionally hear back from you about how it is going.

I forgot about that. We used to make that pledge every morning at my Christian school. We also pledged to the American flag. Now that I think about it we were minors and also had no choice, so the pledge would not be meaningful like it could possibly be for an adult. Maybe it would be, but I'm inclined to think that some oaths and so forth are null while they are still being spoken.

Thats why I dont get the point of pledges an oaths. A person is honest or not, and a ritual wont change that. Words often contradict intention. Uphold it or not, silly rituals with their stage drama, scrpit, and props and paraphernalia. Thinking it all the way through, it makes me possibly suspicious of people who need it, much to the same degree and manner as those who believe you need religion to be moral.

Protection, knowledge and being of service do not require sexual abstinence.

I don't claim to know what you're going through but I think the first two responses to this thread had it right when they said:

- it never works

- set yourself a time period

Personally, I wouldn't waste any time on what you are describing as their are other routes to what you seem to be seeking that don't deprive you of fundamental biological needs.

That's a pretty good point.

If that's a person's honest intention - why the need for a public announcement?

I think a remember hearing, reading (or whatever) something about publicly exclaiming one's piety as being one of the most obnoxious things a person could possibly do - specifically in religious contexts but more broadly just as behaving in the world generally.

I wouldn't worry too much. I think you'll have a hard time finding someone who falls in love with you to the extent that they would want to marry you only to be confronted with the fact that you have no intention of having any sexual contact with them.

I'd be more concerned with the hypothetical person that you're letting down.

read the whole OP. I wasn't looking for advice I was using my own thoughts of wanting to swear an oath to Artemis as an example.I was mostly curious as to if anyone has sworn any religious oaths...Also the reason I had questions about making an oath is because I'm not aromantic.
