Let's make it a bit more scientific. There surely are statistics about bear attacks on women in the woods, and on attacks by men on women in the woods.
I'm too lazy to look them up, but I have a feeling that the women fearing encounters with men more than encounters with bears have a reason.
I suppose I would ask why the scenario is asking about the woods. I don't know if there are stats comparing attacks by men on women in the woods as opposed to attacks by men on women in populated areas, but I have a feeling that the latter would be a much larger number.
Anyway, it would seem that a scientific approach would be for someone to acquire a map, compass, and get as much information as possible from the closest forest ranger before venturing into unknown woods, so that one doesn't get caught in some "lost in the forest" scenario to begin with. Every so often, one hears of these "lost hiker" stories where a great deal of effort and expense has to be incurred to rescue them from their own stupidity and lack of planning. Even worse are those who start fires to signal for help - and end up starting big forest fires.
Another issue with a scenario like this is that people answer them while they're still sitting in comfort. What if you're out lost in the woods, your cellphone has died, you're out of food, and it's after dark and you have no survival skills in the wilderness. Would you rather run into a bear or a forest ranger?
