No matter how sinful we become God loves us. God loves us so much that he “sent his only begotten son so whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life”#. God planned from the beginning of the world to send his son to bring us back into his love. Brining people back into Gods love would create Shalom. This plan, to bring the world back into Shalom is called redemption. To better understand God and his redemption plan we need to understand his love letter to humanity, it is known by its more common name the Bible. There are thousands of stories in the Bible that show God’s redemption plan. The one particular story shall be discussed in this paper is the call of Abram. The call of Abraham shows God’s redemption plan for all of humanity. In order to understand the call of Abraham we have to understand what happened before the call, when the call occurred, where the call occurred, the literary style of the passage, and how the passage relates to redemption.
In Order to understand God’s redemptive plan in the call of Abraham we need to know the history surrounding the event. God created everything that lives. God created the earth, the waters, the sun, the moon and the stars. God created the first two human beings and placed them in the garden of Eden that God also made. God wanted to test his creation so commanded Adam and Eve to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam and Eve with the temptation of the serpent disobeyed God and ate the fruit. After this terrible event God cursed Adam and Even and made them leave the Garden. After a could of generations Mankind because so sinful that God decided to destroy all of mankind for its great wickedness. He found a righteous man whose name was Noah. God told Noah to build an ark and to put two of every animal inside of the ark. Noah did as God commanded and build the ark and gathered the animals inside the ark with the help of his wife. His three sons and there wives also helped build the ark. God then destroyed everything that moves on the face of the earth with waters of a flood. After the flood God put a rainbow in the sky and promised never to do this again. After Noah had died the people of the earth build a tower that reached all the way to heaven. God saw there wicked thoughts and went down to earth and confused the people’s language so they could no longer communicate with each other. Next a man named Terah took his family and left Ur of the Chaldens to go to Canaan. Terah is Abrahams father. Terah soon stopped and settled in Haran.# After his fathers death Abraham is called by God to leave his family and go to a place where God will show him.
Speaking of Abraham Lockyer informs us that “He received a distinct revelation from God, and of God, but we are not told how and when”# We do not know how God told Abraham that he was going to leave. Likewise we are also not told of when this occurred. What we do know is how the call of Abraham actually happened.
So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy five years old when he set out from Haran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there. Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." So he built an altar there to the LORD , who had appeared to him.#

Abraham was a man full of faith. He had to be full of faith in order to leave his household and all that was familiar to him in order to follow God. God needed a righteous man to form his plan of redemption and God choose Abraham as the father of the Israel nation. Israel would become God’s holy nation. A nation that was needed to exists in order for God to bring the real redemption into the world. The real redeemer is not Israel but Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is a great grand son of Abraham.
The story of Abraham occurs in The Bible in the very first Book. The first Book is called Genesis. Genesis is a book of beginnings. The book of beginnings is a very appropriate title. Genesis means origin or beginning# Genesis and the literary style of it is very unique among books. Genesis’s literary style is a science book and a history book at the same time. Genesis shows its science qualities by describing how life got started. Genesis also shows much history, which can be divided into ten sections of families from Adam to Jacob. Genesis also shows its ability as a history book by its showing us the plan of Redemption. By calling Abraham God shows that redemption is coming thru him. The history of Abraham shows that God decides who is needed for his plan of redemption. It is by God’s grace that we are saved and not by our own power.
In conclusion the call of Abraham was just one of the many events that shows God redemptive plan. The love of God is shown by his redemptive plan. By calling Abraham God is showing love to his sinful and rebellious creation. Sin is the cause of everything bad in he world and there is nothing we as humans can do about it. There is nothing we can do in our own power to save us. Only God thru his ultimate redemption purposes in Jesus Christ can we all be saved.
