Those of you who read the whole of the bible, what did you gain from all the genealogies...?

...as well as the enumerations of how many men came from what tribe, etc.... the "boring" bits?

Of course, this extends to other sacred text that contain large enumerations and texts that most people would probably consider tedious.

It's sometimes interesting to note the theophoric names. So, too, Egyptian names.

Other curiosities include such things as ...
  • 7 * 5-squared = 175 ::= the lifespan of Abraham
  • 5 * 6-squared = 180 ::= the lifespan of Isaac
  • 3 * 7-squared = 147 ::= the lifespan of Jacob
:)

I gained the observation that
If the Bible is supposed to be some God's best
shot at communicating with humankind,
he was not very good at it.

It was affirming to me that the "chosen people," the "salt of the earth" as salt refers to preservatives, were indeed appointed and dedicated to passing down the story of ancient times, and were good at it. We, in our time, just need to remember the context and the goal.

Those are some of my favorite parts of the Tanach. I am fascinated by what can be gleaned by studying the genealogies. But I guess for me, being Jewish and all, it's basically studying my family tree.

While I was there, deeply immersed in the endless genealogies of the Hebrew Bible, one verse after another listing who begat whom, something started to dawn on me. It was as if each “son of” was jumping off the page and giving me a little nudge. First came Adam, then Seth, then Enosh, and so on. "These guys knew how to multiply," I thought.

Suddenly, I had a revelation: maybe God was telling me something! Maybe I, too, was destined to be a great reproducer! I felt a cosmic responsibility descend upon me, as if I were carrying the weight of a thousand patriarchs. “That’s it!” I exclaimed. “I must also produce offspring!”

So, of course, I did what any person inspired by God’s word would do: I started looking for a woman. But instead of following the ancient customs, I decided to put a modern twist on it. I went straight to dating apps. After all, if Noah could build an ark, I could build a profile.

My bio? "Potential reproducer, looking for someone to help fulfill my biblical destiny."

I don't think it's impious to admit that certain parts of the Bible make for some rather dry reading. But it's silly to expect modern standards of entertainment value on what is an anthology of ancient texts. The Bible is meant to be studied and prayed, not read as a novel.

The poorest record keeping I've ever read.
