To use it in reference to specific people seems
new. (It's "seems" because I've not looked into
this history.)

I.2. In anaphoric reference to a singular noun or pronoun.

I have a granddaughter whose partner prefers 'they.' Respecting 'their' preference has proved a good deal easier than employing ii in day-to-day conversation. :)
Thinking about it very hard... my use of it may have something to do with my dialect... uzz locals often use "thee."*
Nothing biblical, just part of the local lingo. So maybe "they" goes along with that.

*eg "Ah conna meet im cos thee wunna be able pick me-sen up after."
