How so?

To be honest ...
  1. there are a few whom I despise,
  2. there are those whose posts I view as a waste of space,
  3. there are those whose arguments I rank as worthless, and
  4. there are those with whom I passionately disagree.
Generally, in my opinion, ...
  • ignoring the first seems healthy,
  • ignoring the second eliminates clutter.
  • ignoring the third is sometimes the better option, and
  • ignoring the forth is often more self-serving than productive.
But I could be wrong.

I've enjoyed various internet forums over the last 20 years - never felt that the ignore button was ever necessary. Seems kind of petty or representative of a temperament that is oversensitive and wrapped in cotton wool to preserve that temperament.

To each their own I guess.

When I post an opinion, I always at least make an effort to provide some background, some reason, some evidence that has led me to that opinion.

The people on my ignore list are those who disagree with my opinions, but consistently refuse to give any reason other than that they must be right because they think they are.

I see absolutely no reason to begin paying attention to them again. They are, as history shows us, most unlikely to change.

I've found it easiest to simply recognize those whom I wish to ignore...and then don't read their posts, or if I do, then not respond to them, no matter how much I want to...

but then, I've also backed off on reading and posting in the more confrontational threads...for the most part...and yes I do on occasion kick myself...

I've only ever had one person on ignore, and that was only for about 10 minutes (so probably shouldn't count).

I do have a go **** yourself list though.

After you’ve filled all those categories, is there anybody left? Other than the people you agree with that is, and what can you possibly learn from them?

It should be self-evident that there were (and are) a great many left. In fact, that category has constituted the overwhelming majority of the members for my over two decades here at RF.
