Work...home...school...politics. Are you sure you weren't listening to the GODFATHER'S album before posting this.

Work, yes very tired indeed.
Home, sanctuary always something to do there.
School, should go back, especially since the New York State Thruway Authority offers to pay for 90% through their tuition assistance program.
Politics, never got involved in such madness.

Seeing as how I currently do not have a job nor do I live at home (dorm life is quite entertaining, actually) I would have to say no. I just started school again this semester so I'm still getting used to it. But I'm sure that it will change. I'm always worn out at the end of a semester, ready for a break and a little change.

Huajiro I had the first attack of "same old, same old" when I was 17. I remember telling a teacher about it and some others that I was in a rut and felt like I was doing the same old thing every day. My mother who only gave me two pieces of advice in my whole life game me the key. She said that when one is in a rut and/or bored it is because they chose to be this way. If there are choices that are outside your rut or cycle but you chose the ones within your pattern than that is your choice.

I thought about it for a while and realized the answer for me was a hobby. It was at that time (1985) that I started martial arts. I just picked up photography as a hobby in 2000 and I try to make it a habit to do something unique at least once a year.

The point is that if you feel caught in a cycle find something of interest outside that cycle and do it. Hobbies are an easy way for me but maybe its planning a trip or doing research on the internet. Work from within the varibles you can manipulate and don't spend a ton of time on those you cannot directly affect.

My mother's other piece of advice was "it is ok to do drugs in college." lol sorry i had to type that....cracks me up to think about it.

At the (over)ripe age of 61, when I feel tired, I try something new. If I grow tired of the Chinese language (not very likely, though), I would spend some time on the Dravidian languages (and I really should finish that second semester of Hindi in the first place). If I ever grow tired of languages, I'll find a religion that I know too little of to dig into, like Baha'i, but Daoism and Sikhism will keep me busy before that. Should I ever grew tired of languages and religions, there´s music. I really should restore my bassoon and learn to play it. And there are so many vegetables and spices that I haven't tried yet in my garden.

It seems like most people are so young. I am a little older....more people depend on me, makes you feel a little trapped at times....can be hard when you have no one to depend on yourself. I am sorry, I am just venting a bit.

No wasn't where I was going with that post....I was saying that when one gets in a rut addition of a hobby or new venue may be in store. LIke posting on here. I started playing mah jong while posting on here and I had forgotten how much I enjoy that game.

Look find an interest and pursue it for a few months...or if you tire of it quickly chunk it for another one. You don't seem to have any hobbies from what I have learned about you...but I can tell you hobbies makes you spirt healthy.

Poke around find a potential long term hobby to experiment with and a short term intertainment piece (like for me mah jong) to play with in the intrim.

Actually, for you you keep saying you want to learn about religion.....set a goal to learn so much about each group in any particular order..maybe that is a way out of your rut....I have done that and found it very fullfilling.....

I have a lot of hobbies....I am actually a very active person. I screwed my back up in the gym a little while back and can't even mountain bike anymore ( I mountain bike a lot). I think that is the big thing driving me crazy now. I have a very bad pinched nerve and may have to get surgery, this is causing me great grief.

Sorry about your problems, huajiro. :(

I know how you feel, though, at least to a degree. Sometimes I am so pessimistic and get so down that I can barely see past the next day and into the future. I am currently trying to get out of my 'rut.' I hate my job, am totally dissatisfied with my life right now, but I am working on changing things. I think Robtex gave excellent advice. To help myself get through my rut, I am planning on doing some volunteer work, trying different types of exercise, and I have just started taking a course to become a certified TEFL teacher. I think it's good to set goals for oneself too. My goal is to get a teaching job abroad within the upcoming year---as long as I keep myself focused on that goal, it helps me stay motivated and upbeat.

Best of luck to you....hang in there! ;)

hi huarijo,

I think most people feel that way at some time or other; during various stages in my life, I have learned a lot about methodology to combat 'negative' traits.Which is how I see this phenomenon, since it brings with it a feeling of lethargy and disatisfaction.

One method to combat the old 'drudgery' syndrome is to adopt the 'do that which you need to do before that which you wish to do'. It does work for some people.

If we go about our daily chores resenting the time spent on them, and try to 'escape' by doing something we enjoy in between the chores, the action produces an even grater feeling of resentment at the need to do the chores, plus the 'guilt' of having put off the chores.

Try it? - it might help you

Going with the majority, I'm learning Modern Standard Chinese (aka Putonghua, what's supposed to be used, not only Beijing/northern China, by in all at least 800 million out of the 1.3 billion Chinese). Later than 1912, Mandarin is not a very useful or correct name for it. Whatever you call it, I find it very rewarding to study a language that different from the Indo-European languages.
