One must judge if the insult is a friendly one.
When @Wu Wei calls me a "fetid Scot", I know
that it's affectionate...he's coming on to me.

I know this will crush your dreams...and I'm ok with that......but how many times must I tell you.... I don't swing that way fella

How vindictive are you?

Do you report that which offends you or do you just let it slide?

Personally, I am of such a highly evolved nature that I would rather ignore the report button. In fact, upon analysis of this report button, I find it as irrational as the need for retail managers who cater to Karen.
I cannot remember when I have ever reported a post.
But RF is a very moderate forum.

This ... I report because I've heard that moderators don't act unless they get a report. If that's true, then this place would degenerate into a name calling free for all in no time at all, if nobody reported. But as others have said, not because I disagree, but because of a perceived rule infraction. I'm not always sure if any action was taken, as I don't keep track of the reports I make, which are relatively few.

But the forum stays civil, so we (all of us) must be overall doing something right.
I can clarify that we will act on things we see. Plenty of reports for evaluation come from mods themselves. But we are all just volunteers so there's no schedule for observation. Sometimes we miss things and do appreciate it when members help out with reporting. :)

Thank you. Yes, I realise mods are also members. I think more gets by when there are fewer mods on line, but that's just simple math.

Why, I'm so vindictive that when I join a new forum, the very first time I find out that someone reported one of my posts I create a thread accusing anyone who uses the report button of being vindictive.

Oh wait, I've never actually done that.

Sorry, I must have been thinking about somebody else. :)

so far, I have not used that function, although there were times it could have been, but why? what point does it serve?
I never reported bullies in school either.
why?
it is bad form
and everybody despises rats [weird fact of life, that actually makes sense]

I don't believe I've ever used "report," (though I don't always remember everything, so I could be mistaken).

Still, I think it's possible for a member to say something that is egregious enough, and more importantly hurtful enough to another member, that I would consider reporting it.

What?

Who seriously thinks it's bad form to report a bully and why should we care what they think? And the "snitches get stitches" mentality is gang crap that leads to kids getting gunned down in drive bys and none of the witnesses wanting to talk. Not a good way to live.

I agree that is a terrible reality, yet it is all too real, even if unsolicited.
and NO, not a part of any "Gang" or such enterprise....
a peaceful inhabitant...in deed and in fact... since you asked

Well, it ain't my reality. I will "snitch" on you if you're doing wrong, and be proud of it.

If you see a poster being abused in a manner
violating the rules, reporting the offender has value.
It's all about what kind of forum you want to have.

well, thanks for sharing, nothing to do with me,
but, since you brought that up,
what would construe "doing wrong" then, to you....just out of curiosity
In the context of this discussion, breaking forum rules. I'm not going to report people if they talk about doing drugs, though, because I think that rule is stupid. But if they're insulting people, generally being nasty, trying to proselytize, etc., I report them.
