Todays whit walk

Here are some pictures I took today of the annual Whit walk in Saddleworth.
All the local churches take part ( 12 this year ).
Every one is lead by a Band ... Who are joined by bands from all over the country in the evening, for a massive band contest.

This year is the 200 anniversary of the Ebinezer Congregational church so I have shown more pictures of them... This is just a taste of dozens that I took this morning.
Two bishops attended this year.

More pictures.....

Is this the same as the Penatcost Terry?

Yes indeed the day celebrated is actually whit Sunday ( Pentecost) (7th Sunday after Easter.)
It is traditional to have a Walk of witness, the Friday before, in Saddleworth...
This goes back into the mists of time... though once it was quite common through out England; we are the last ones left.

when all the churches are gathered in the field a service is held with prayers and hymns chosen by the various congregations. There is always a very senior priest from one of the denominations who gives the sermon... This year it was an Anglican Bishop .. two years ago it was a Catholic Bishop and before that the Methodist Moderator.

Very cool...I'd like to experience that some day Terry. In our church we wear red (actaully I forgot plus I do not look in red  ). We also had the Gospel reading in the various languages represented by members of our congregation, English, Spanish, others I did not recognize.

We get quite a lot of visitors coming to join in....
We have a weekly Communion service on Thursday evening .. This week some visitors, a middle aged couple came to the service, On the way out they said what a lovely way to start the week end... they joined The witness walk from our Church this morning ... about two miles there and two miles back.
I never get to do the walk, as I have to be at the field and set up the stands I have made for the red Churches together banners.
