Trayvon Martin shooting - murder or justified?

Notice how this Foxnews affiliate (what a surprise) jumps past the beginning of the story (Zimmerman calling 911 telling the dispatcher that he is following "a real suspicious guy" who "looks like he's... on drugs or something" before this previously undisclosed witness's testimony would apply, but acknowledging: "And from that moment to the shooting, details are few." Sol let's just make something up: "The witness only wanted to be identified as "John," and didn't not want to be shown on camera." Yeah, that's good enough for me! And good enough for most Foxnews viewers.....just scroll through the comments thread! That will tell you something about what makes these people tick.
The possible existence of a corroborating witness is a complicating factor.
Impugning the source without any evidence?
We expect more than just anti-Fox diatribes here.

The 911 calls are appalling, chilling, horrifying. I am absolutely devastated for Trayvon's family.

So much points toward murder and a cover up. Horrible. Just horrible. :(

What's almost as bad as the cop's apathy is how some people take advantage of this families tragedy to push their own political agenda.

The killing was not justified. Hell... In most cases, killing someone isn't justifiable, regardless. Unless you really feel you are in severe danger and there is no other option (such as walking away), and the danger is very real and present (such as someone threatening you with a weapon), then killing someone is not exactly the right thing to do.

I hope justice is done in this case, but I am cynical.

Can you Amis please take weapons out of the hands of civilists and become a civilized nation?
Thank you in advance.

Like I said, read the comments below the article from Foxnews viewers.....and that's enough right there to impugn the source. Fox is like a yellow porchlight that attracts the worst of the worst for their loyal fan base. But what else can be expected from an institution that runs keeps pushing themes of fear, disgust, resentment, envy, at their viewers!

I have yet to see anything that suggest it was anything but a cold-blooded murder. The kid was yelling for help, and unless there was some very bizarre extraneous circumstances that we do not know about because it wasn't on audio (which is very unlikely) the shooter should be tried for murder.
And the way the police have handled it somehow managed to bring my liking and trust of police down even lower, which after the IMPD protected an on-duty cop who was drunk and killed a motorist I didn't think my disliking of cops could get any lower.

And I suppose it was a decision of the members to join ALEC, and craft model legislation! Or is it more likely that the average NRA member doesn't even know what ALEC is?
We're involved in all sorts of legislative activity.
That's a major function of the NRA, & one of the reasons I joined.
i take it that you're not a member?
Anyway, this tragedy really ought not to be about making political hay from it.....yet.

I really wish people in the media would stop talking about gun law in regards to this case. Listening to the 911 call and knowing how many calls Zimmerman had made to the police in previous weeks makes it pretty obvious to me this man was awash in schizoid disassociation. Why the cops bought the self-defence argument in face of the evidence is beyond me. Here is where race came into play. They should be fired/punished but we all know that will never happen, particularly in Florida.

Kathryn-- I think you should feel free to join whatever community protest against this you feel you can be a part of.. the political polarization that has made people feel like they can't stand for a common cause without some bizarre guilt by association is a big reason there are so many things are wrong with the country now, imo.

I am curious about this. It's very unlikely that someone with schizoid personality disorder would care enough about his/her community to join the neighborhood watch. And as far as disassociation goes, only a psychological evaluation can show this. Some people are actually that mean and cold hearted, and are very aware of their actions, as well as potential consequences, when they kill someone.
But yes, the media has become absolutely horrible in it's coverage of such events. The way it covered the Casey Anthony trail was just absolutely appalling, especially how they made it to seem more like a sporting event.

You ever watch "Criminal Minds"? Dude was totally an unsub waiting to occur.

Obviously just my speculation.

The whole thing just makes me angry. He needs a taste of his own medicine.

It's occured to me that consistency would dictate that if this killing is deemed "justified" in the eyes of the law, then it would be justified in a similar way for any black person to shoot any neighbourhood watch member on sight.

Yes, especially since that would mean that in Florida, standing your ground means stalking, harassing, and then killing someone.

Sorry but no, we will not.
Certainly not until Canuckistanians stop manufacturing & distributing poutine.

We should remember that this is an isolated case of wrongdoing. It must be objectively weighed against the hundreds of thousands of times
per year when guns are properly used in self-defense. But with this tragedy so fresh & painful, tis not the time to rewrite public policy.

Other issues:
We lack info about the actions leading up to the shooting. Some are quick to claim cold blooded murder. But this seems inconsistent with
what I've read from multiple sources, eg, Zimmerman's purported injuries, a witness, Zimmerman's background & history. I'd put money
on his having good intentions, bad judgement & inadequate self-control, which led to his escalating what should've been a benign contact into
something deadly. It's clearly still very very wrong, but fringe elements calling for Zimmerman's death are inappropriate.

Odd news observation:
I saw Zimmerman described as a "white Hispanic". I'd never seen this pair of words in the news before. I infer that it's important to distance
him from Hispanics, who often don't consider themselves "white", but now need this category in order to avoid being tainted.

Handing over the use of violent force to police is the hallmark of any civilized society.
Only barbarian societies allow their citizens to take the law into their own hands.

Once I read in a book something very interesting: The societies of Europe are pacified by police (German original: polizeilich pazifiziert).
I find it very interesting that the USA still is on the level of barbarian nations.
