Officials ban trick-or-treating, other Halloween events in LA area

Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Los Angeles County, which has recorded more COVID-19 cases than any other in the United States, has barred trick-or-treating on Halloween this year due to the health crisis.

County health officials outlined the ban in updated guidance, which prohibits traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating as well as car-to-car exchanges, Halloween parties, carnivals, festivals, live entertainment and haunted houses.

County officials, however, said they will allow Halloween car parades and drive-by events, online parties and drive-in type movies.

The Southern California county isn't the only place imposing Halloween restrictions.

Universal Studios has already canceled its popular Halloween Horror Nights in Hollywood and Orlando, Fla., and Disney canceled its annual "Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party" at its theme parks. [

Well, that's a bummer. I guess the kids will be disappointed. So will the candy companies.

Origin
One of the common elements of the Halloween night trick-or-treat tradition is adults’ grumbling that some of the kids coming to their houses seeking candy are “too big” or “too old” for such an activity. Although there are no universal rules about who may engage in trick-or-treating — and some people feel everyone should be free to participate, including adults of all ages — general consensus seems to be that kids should be looking to enjoy Halloween activities other than collecting candy door-to-door once they reach middle or high school age.

As Halloween approached in 2018, many social media users began sharing (and questioning) what appeared to be a municipal ordinance for Chesapeake, Virginia, which limited “trick-or-treat activities” by law to children aged 12 and under:

This image does reproduce a section of Chesapeake’s code of ordinances (enacted in 1970), which not only sets a maximum age for trick-or-treaters (12), but also establishes an end time for that activity on Halloween night (8:00 PM):

Sec. 46-8. – Trick or treat activities.

(a) If any person over the age of 12 years shall engage in the activity commonly known as “trick or treat” or any other activity of similar character or nature under any name whatsoever, he or she shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine of not less than $25.00 nor more than $100.00 or by confinement in jail for not more than six months or both.

(b) If any person shall engage in the activity commonly known as “trick or treat” or any other activity of similar character or nature under any name whatsoever after 8:00 p.m., he or she shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine of not less than $10.00 nor more than $100.00 or by confinement in jail for not more than 30 days or both.

The land of Swiss cheese. Whats not to love?

Do you know the difference between Switzerland and Sweden?

The difference with Sweden vs USA on COVID is that the Swedish government was honest to their electorate and took them along with them. Whether they have used the correct strategy will be discovered in about 5-years time.

Republicans love denying science and helping spread pandemics.
Speaking of denying science, I suppose wearing masks are not effective enough since one is banning a holiday that centers around wearing masks.

Irony.

Halloween has been loosing it's flavor for years now. Once in a blue moon I'd see someone trick a treating. We have a hunted house nearby I wanted to visit but guess that "may" be out of the question. It seems we're getting a lot of COVID positive cases where I live. Couple of our local bus drivers they said ring positive of it.

I wonder what kind of fuddy-duddy NIMBYs came up with this one. I can just see them putting out the dragnet and setting up sting operations to catch trick-or-treating delinquents.
