Trump says he will ban TikTok through an executive action

ultimately, I think if the Chinese are spying on Americans and using collected information in ways against them, then that is a really big deal.

...I just wonder in what ways the information is being used against us. Anyone know?

What exactly is Tiktok?
Whatever sort of thingy it is, Trump is either an idiot or secretly wants it to thrive and prosper.

well, I'm sure they're learning all sorts of useful stuff about my 11-year-old granddaughter...o_O:confused::eek::p:D:oops::rolleyes:

I understand concern about security...but I doubt shutting down one social media site will staunch the leaking of information from America through all other existing media...:eek::eek:

What I think is that China is ripping off our intellectual property and using it to outcompete us with their government and businesses in cahoots.

I also think they're spying to find out what they can about those who oppose them including Chinese dissidents. To that I say "DOWN WITH CHINA. And XI is a 狗屁 (gŏu pì) — “Dog fart” and a 色狼 (sè láng) — “Color-seeking wolf” He's certainly a 绿茶婊 (Lǜ Chá Biào) –“Green Tea *****”

What’s Going On With TikTok? Here’s What We Know

From what I can gather, TikTok is owned by a Chinese guy, is based in China, collects all manner of information, and thus, according to accusations (and not much else mind you) can possibly be used to spy on America.
And we can assume that this is the case, because American tech companies very definitely do use their technology to spy on non-Americans and Americans alike for their government.

I heard that the REAL reason he wants to ban tiktok is because he hates Sarah Cooper's lip-synch's of him that are posted there, hahaha!

When American companies are engaging in rampant and largely unchecked surveillance of Americans already, I... I just cannot bring myself to care. Or rather, I see little relevant difference between domestic surveillance capitalism and foreign surveillance capitalism. Both are done for the benefit of surveillance capitalists, not the people they spy on. Both are done without the explicit consent of those whose data is harvested and sold. Both are a significant problem that the United States has thus far failed to adequately address.

In dumpster's case, this is obviously pandering to their xenophobic base rather than a proper attempt to deal with the problem of surveillance capitalists.

When YouTube gets coopted by Russian content farms making literally one of the largest media corporations in the world on the back of American servers and partakes in massive misinformation campaigns, nobody bats an eye.

But one social media app, all of which gather some form of information, from China gets popular, then everyone loses their minds.

I mean, yes this is a good route to take. But we are past due for a genuine investigation of American tech companies, too. Not the pony show we saw recently, I mean, a panel of informed experts taking a deep look at the what the heck is going on.

Those aren't mutually exclusive possibilities.
Suppose you were related to Trump. You want to make a lot of money the old fashioned way, by manipulating the government. So you convince Trump that some internet company is bad. Trump tweets something that drives down the share price. You buy a bunch of stock.

Then when Trump forgets about it, prices rebound and you make a killing. All perfectly legal.

I doubt it in this case, as tik tok is related to his news. He's heard the name. Kind if like I have. Except the news of its use was aimed against him.
I was also being sightly sarcastic. I think Trump is dumb enough to think banning it will get rid of it and be done with it.

As far as I can tell that's not unusual for tech companies. Apple and Samsung, for example, were for a long time locked in multiple IP lawsuits with one another over (allegedly) stolen technology.

As for governments and businesses being in cahoots, the NSA has for a long time engaged in industrial espionage for the sake of American companies, including against companies seated in nominally allied countries such as Germany.

I thought it might be a YouTube like thingy from the few news clips Ive seen that mentioned it, but I thought snap chat was pictures rather than videos.
It's both from what I gather. I don't use those apps. The only social media I have is Facebook and Twitter. Don't want or need any others.
