Turkeys filmed being slaughtered as Palin interviewed.

, calling it fun is just crazy. I lived on a farm when I was growing up and had to participate in the slaughter of animals for food. I hated it and it definitely wasn't fun. I was however necessary if we wanted to eat them. I think the lack of empathy for the animals that were being slaughtered for our well being and calling it fun was what I found to be callous. I am not naive, I know how our food gets to the table. I have been in the position of the one doing the killing. It is not something to be taken lightly. I usually had tears rolling down my face. Feeling the life drain out of a living creature is a humbling experience. The "oh it's been such fun being here" attitude was in my opinion not something most people would appreciate.

I'm pretty sure she was describing the whole "pardoning the turkey" as being fun.... and not the slaughter of the others.

And while it's not fun, I'm sure meat eaters can at the very least deal with seeing the image, and not cry "How dare she give an interview while the people who slaughter turkeys do their job".

She is a little clueless. But the main thing about this video.....it makes me want to be a vegetarian.

I bet if you saw people extracting gelatin from animals, it would make you want to give up gummy bears forever.

Gelatin is a protein produced by partial hydrolysis of collagen extracted from the bones, connective tissues, organs, and some intestines of animals such as the domesticated cattle, and horses

Common examples of foods that contain gelatin are gelatin desserts, trifles, aspic, marshmallows, and confectioneries such as Peeps and gummy bears. Gelatin may be used as a stabilizer, thickener, or texturizer in foods such as ice cream, jams, yogurt, cream cheese, and margarine; it is used, as well, in fat-reduced foods to simulate the mouthfeel of fat and to create volume without adding calories.

Consider also glue... animal glue... these protein colloid glues are formed through hydrolysis of the collagen from skins, bones, tendons, and other tissues, similar to gelatin. Usually from horses.

Hoof glue is used today in woodworking, specifically cabinetry.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
Thats not the point Kathryn...

Its just ignorant..to have the annual ceremony of giving a turkey a "pardon" at Thanksving time..to only then show turkeys in the background with their dead feet sticking out of a machine apparently havign the blood drained out of their bodies..while a hundred more wait in a cramped cage waiting to meet the same fate...

It sort of killed the 'warm and fuzzy" feeling of letting one of the hook...(which I dont beleive they really do anyway to be real honest..I think they just say that..)

Anyway MOST people dont want to have to see something like that unless they don't have a choice..

And Im with Texan..it kind of makes you want to be a vegetarian..Or at the very least..cut back on meat consumption...

Im not stupid..I know if I was "on my own" and I wanted meat..I would have to learn to hunt and slaughter...Im already a "fisherman" at heart..

But again thats not the point..

And you're missing MY point. I thought the whole thing was ignorant. Like I said, Palin is a loose cannon PR wise. The whole video from start to finish is crazy.

MY point was - hey, like it or not, this is how turkeys get to our tables.

Reality TV at it's finest - LOL!

Lots of people abstain from these products because they come from animals. What's your point? That people are inconsistent in their ethics? There's a surprise!

Those are vegetarians because they are already vegetarians... I'm talking about people who become vegetarian only after seeing animals slaughtered. I bet those same people would enjoy a good gummy bear... until they knew it came from horse intestines.

Meh, my feeling is that if we are going to kill an animal for food then we should use all of the animal. I have no problem with extracting gelatin or collagen. Why is that any worse than eating skeletal muscle? In fact, what disgusts me is the idea of killing a bunch of animals and ONLY eating the skeletal muscle and throwing the rest away.

Point is, if you can eat these things knowing about it, simply seeing it shouldn't suddenly change anything. It might not be pleasant... you might not want to see it frequently... but if you did see it... I think you should be able to deal with it.

I have no compunction about the fact that animals are killed for food. BUT I do think that we a a society should treat animals in a much more humane way than we do. They should be treated with respect while being raised and killed in the least painful way possible. Factory farm processing is disgusting. It's barbaric to the animals, to the workers and extremely harmful to the environment.

I also think that most of us could stand to eat a lot less meat than we currently do.

All of what you just said is true.

This being said, I think it is silly if this particular video makes anyone want to be a vegetarian.

I agree completely.

I didn't get that so much. For me, it gave me flashbacks to 1997 and people making fun of Canadian politician Gilles Duceppe for photos of him looking somewhat foolish at a campaign stop at a cheese factory:

I'm not really going to become a vegetarian because of this video. My comment was just a way of expressing the fact that I don't like what our animals go through. But even if I did decide to be a vegetarian because of it (including abstaining from gummy bears)....would there be something wrong with that? Maybe if more people knew what kind of conditions our animals live in and the brutal ways in which they are killed, they would eat less meat. It's good to be reminded once in a while.

At any rate, as others have pointed out - the fact that Palin doesn't think twice about doing an interview in front of turkeys being slaughtered while making smalltalk and sipping coffee just shows a lack of tact. I can't imagine being so flippant about it.

Your right, I don't think it even crossed her mind, which points out the real problem.

OH MY GOSH -ARE YOU KIDDING ME? TURKEYS GET KILLED AROUND THIS TIME OF YEAR????? AUGHHHHHHH! I HAD NO IDEA!!!

And are you telling me that people actually go hunting and kill animals with guns? What is this world coming to?????? SAY IT AIN'T SOOOOOO!!!!!

I hope that everyone who finds those practices shocking at LEAST buys cage free eggs and doesn't wear leather.

How foolish. Perhaps reading comprehension is a challenge for you, but no one is even talking about that. No one is objecting to the slaughter, but pointing out how ridicilous it is to film it while conducting an interview (especially one about the 'fun' of pardoning one). This shouldn't be too hard to wrap ones brain around, but people surprise you every day.

No one is saying "how dare she" here, kiddo. No one is objecting to the slaughter itself. The point, for all you people slow on the uptake, is that it's tacky and unprofessional for a politician to conduct an interview in front of it. You know - taste and class? Or maybe not.

You crack me up sometimes (though I'm sure it's unintentional on your part). I said clearly in my post that Palin is a loose cannon PR wise. I was responding to OTHER posts after the OP that talked about becoming vegetarian after seeing the slaughter of turkeys, etc, etc.

Surely you've read enough of these threads to realize that they grow little branches sometimes. That's what my remarks were - little side remarks. I thought it was pretty obvious that I was being flippant.

But maybe I was being too subtle for you.
